Are you SURE that only the early pre '85 have steel arms? This will solve some of my problems...

He's got three 16" aftermarket wheels. He said that he may be able to get me the 4th one..Not very nice wheels...We'll see.

For me it will be better if its a pre 85...easyer to convert.

I can't imagine how this guy thought he has a turbo 944..I saw the engine and there was no turbo...pure and simple... ;)

I called the guy again and I fugerd out its a pre '85 beacuse he has a scuare(928 style dash)..at least thats what he told me. :)

Can I also use the speedo, tach and gauges then?

Sure it is pre-1985.5 precisely. Hope this link will help you with more information about 944 brakes.

This is not correct, the '86 & up spindle changed from the early cars. The flange got narrower and the bolt pattern got wider, also the 83-85 NA have a 76mm caliper mount and 86-91 Turbo has a 94mm caliper mount. Sorry but there is no way to bolt Turbo calipers to a Super without some modifications.

Oh! I thought that the '86 Turbo spindle is different to the post '87 turbo but similar to the early NA (of course with wider cailper mount for the 4-pot). Do '86 turbo spindles have same strut mounts as the early spindles? So that the entired '86 T ('86 only)spindle/brake assembly can be adapted to the supers the same way as the early spindle/brake?

No, as I said above the flange [strut mount] is not the same as the early one thus it is not a direct bolt on to the Super strut. There is (early) 83-85 and (late) 87-91 with the 86 as a mixture of the two. The 86 has the early spindle/hub but the late strut mount.

Another thing that started in 86 was Porsche used a transmission gear speedo cable so there is no longer a hole in the spindle for the speedo cable, as such is with the Superbug and early 924/944.

The 1986 951 (944 Turbo) spindle confuses most people, including Porsche parts dealers. This spindle was one year only and the outter part (hub carrier [spindle]/hub/disc) is same as 83-85 but the inner part (strut flange bolt pattern and width) is the same as the 87-91, it is a unique part.

If it's got steel arms then it is an 83-85 model and NOT a Turbo.

Thank you Superman for the input. I've got to amend my knowledge base. The '86 Turbo (951) spindle was always confusing me!

Thanks for the info guy!

Supe,

You should really write a compete article about Porsche brakes/ models and how do they abapt to the beetle and Superbeetle.
Also how can you tell the difference between the models(the '86 one of a kind spindle is deffenetly new info to me)
There are a few articles on the germanlook and superbeetlesonly but every is for specific conversions and is just the basics. Some of the articles are really confusing.

Take care,
