As much metal that has been cut, problems with fitting are normal.

New parts arrived
"race weight" oval wings http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/119117.jpg Very good quality, it even has the hump at the runningboard http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/119118.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/119119.jpg Paul. |
|
Some more weight saving, once I am finished with this "single skin" hood it will look original.

Fits like a glove!
Do you mean you took out the inner skin of that front hood? |

The first attempt failed, so here's the second attempt of repairing the Right 1/4 panel.
after some hammering and grinding. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/119818.jpg Hammering the oval shape in it. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/119819.jpg Starting to look original. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/119821.jpg Paul. |
After the new sheetmetal was in shape, It was time to make "the notch"
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/119999.jpg Made a notch and tacked it in place, it looks a bit odd but the shape is like the original. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/119997.jpg And again some trial fitting. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/119998.jpg Paul. |
Next week I can Finlay work on the car again. the trailer is completely level and the car is welded on it at the wright height.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/120528.jpg Paul. |
Finlay did some work to the car again :)
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/120711.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/120712.jpg Paul. |
1/4 panel is welded up now. IRL it's pretty strait, even without filler.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/120927.jpg Also started repairing the innerwing, here it's almost finished http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/120928.jpg Paul. |
:goodjob:

A nice fit and welding job again. Nice work.
|
Is wasn't easy to get the dash near the doorpillar. I finally managed it and it looks good if I say so my self.

Right innerwing is almost done, only the marked pieces need some love.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/121705.jpg Paul. |
Inching closer. Lots of nice work.

After the innerwing was done, it was time to start with the Porsche front beam.
Porsche sheetmetal underneed the spare wheel well http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122028.jpg When the car is finished it should not have rake. Now it has a 3,6deg rake, this is why the arm has to be 3,6deg. as well. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122027.jpg Bend and shaped 3mm steel tacked in. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122025.jpg The innerwing has to come out a bid to reinforce the a-arm mounting point. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122026.jpg Paul. |
As I told earlyer, I had to widen the innerwing a bit, so I had to try it with cardboard first.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122088.jpg When the cardboard fitted, I made it out of sheetmetal and welded it in. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122091.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122092.jpg Then I tack welded the Porsche bracket in place. I just had to try the shockabsorber. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122095.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122094.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122096.jpg Paul. |
I am starting to like your build better and better now your coming to the performance part of it!
Great job Paul, keep at it. |

there's a hole in the innerwing ;D. I am going for 6-7deg.caster, -1camber and 0 toe in/out.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122136.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122134.jpg Inside of the innerwing, not much space there. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122135.jpg And ofcourse I needed to test a wheel. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122137.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122138.jpg Paul. |
Unfortunately I had to little space to move the spindle up n down. after some internet searching, I found out that the golf1 inserts will fit the Porsche strut and is 2" shorter. so I bought a used set to test fit.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122216.jpg if it fits I can shorten the complete strut by 2". Paul. |
Point of no return (again)
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122296.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122297.jpg I had planned to use more of the Porsche innerwing, but I did not have enough space. Now I only used the upper shockmount and made it 5cm higher. When I find the correct position I will weld it in the innerwing. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122294.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/122295.jpg Paul. |
Finally did some work on VWrankenstein again.
Started working on the upper Shock mounts Took out the rubber, shortend the the Porsche mount and made a plate to close the underside of the Porsche mount. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123928.jpg Test fit the bearing Busch http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123929.jpg Underplate fits like a glove. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123927.jpg After some welding and grinding, I fitted the bearing. Looks pretty original. This bearing fits the Golf1 shocks perfectly http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123931.jpg Bottomview http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123926.jpg Paul. |
Today again found some time for VWrankenstein.
To make sure there was enough space for wheel movement I bought Golf1 shocks. The Golf1 shock are about 5,5cm shorter. Here's the difference. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123961.jpg Now the struts had to be shortend too. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123962.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123963.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123964.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123965.jpg And again some trail fit. (I used the wrong (too big) wheels) http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123966.jpg Paul. |
Cool last pic Paul! If your shocks turn out to be worn, I have a set of gas-filled Golf-1 shocks for you ;-)

I'll keep that in mind.;) |
Today I started by fixating the front wheel (brakedisk) at the wright camber and caster.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123985.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123984.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123988.jpg Made the innerwing mount to fit the innerwing, fixate everything again and made the first tackwelds. It's coming along just fine I think. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123987.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/123986.jpg Paul. |
The above picture of the shock dome on the simple 0.8mm thick inner fender does raise the question (I am sure you expected this, but I'am willing to bite anyways) what further stiffening of the inner fender your planning? I know its not load bearing like with a 1303, but still the shock dampening creates considerable forces nontheless.
|
Wally,
Yes, the innerwing is deff. not strong enough. But the rollcage will solve that ;) . The rollcage-tubes will run from under the dash to the upper shock mount and ends in the spare wheel well (on the front a-arm mount) Cheers, Paul. |
That deffo seems like the right way to do it!
