Finally after a long time I Start to work on my car again.

I weld the steering to the chassis this is a easy work but the hard work was to find the correct place of the steering to have a descent bump steer and Ackerman effect.

Some pics of the Appleton steering:

Also I weld mountings for seats (very tight):

Hi Hugovw1976,

Nice cool ride you are building...

That Audi V8 engine and transmission, do you have the mesures for that, the buildt ind mechanical size (wide long and high and mountings are)

I am planing to build one midengine vw my self.

Kind regards

Thanks a million :-)

Can I get you to mesure your frontsuspension arm's to both the upper and the lower arm and the hubs.

My plan is to draw everything in 3D first before building it.

Here are a couple of measurements from when I was researching an Audi V8 swap:
4.2l engine length: 464mm, 195kg
3.7l engine length: 516mm

from front of 4.2 engine to axle line of Audo FWD 5 speed: 25"

Hope that helps...

Hugo, how bad did the bump steer turn out?

I'm worried that it's not good because the outer pivots on your steering rack are so far outboard of the lower control arm pivot points.

Jason

0.013" at full droop
Actully I have to make longer the steering rack (6"). Because with the shorter rack the bumb turn in so bad.

volkdent April 23rd 2008 21:57

Oh good!!! Longer is easier, shorter is not, so that's good. I think you must have a much better concept of suspension geometry than I do, I think I would need a lot of help building a suspension from scratch as you have. Keep us posted.

Jason

The length also depend in the position of the tie rod on spindle, in the case of the Corvette C4 spindle the position is far away of the imaginary line between uper and lower ball joint.

I hope this illustration help to explain.
