3rd try for an engine case.
2 Attachment(s)
I started tearing down a 1.7 core engine from a 412 to use the case for my 2270. I discovered why that ol' 412 got retired to the boneyard.
The torque converter rivets were broken when we removed the engine from the car. I guess the engine over-reved when that happened, and caused the rod cap to fail. Both of the rod bolts are intact (surprisingly) but one rod cap nut got ripped off when it hit the case above no.2 exhaust lifter. The section that broke off the rod cap broke cleanly on both sides. The first case I was gonna use had thrust clearance issues, which can be fixed, but for the $ of a couple of good core cases. The second case I was gonna use has a piece of the breather tower knocked off. If I was using a 911 fan, that would be great, but, I already got one of Ol' Joe's DTM's (made in the '90's) that I would rather use. This case has some pretty serious damage done to the no.2 exhaust lifter boss, and minor damage elsewhere in the case. Sooo, Do I fix case number one, or keep searching for better? Yetibone |
Ouch, that is ugly. Looks like something from the trophy shelf at Jakes.

UPDATE:
The no.2 rod bearing spun, and burned up, causing the failure of the rod cap. I don't know if this happened before, or after the torque converter/flex plate rivets broke or not. It definately lunched the case. :bawling: There's a hole the size of a kindergarten pencil just above the lifter boss, and some webbing crunched off in the other case half. Anybody got a good Type IV case with an open breather tower for sale? Yetibone |
ah, JBWeld it. :D
sorry, no cases here. will jake sell you one of his cores? vujade sold him 4 or 5 last summer. maybe he can help out. keep a look out at pullapart.com (espeically at the norcross location). they occasionally have cadidates there and i can go grab it for you. |
Sure how many do you need ? We have been parting out 914's since they were new. Steve

If the saddles, and thrust surface are OK, I'll de-stud it and send it to you. If not, I'm gonna drag it down to you behind my truck! |
Joe, you going over to see Jake again anytime soon?
I should have called you on sat, guy at the swap I went to had a nice GA 914 case for sale. |
Sue and I are driving down Saturday for Dyno Day, and the Silver Dollar Shootout. I don't know if I'll see Jake or not.
Jake?.. |
mmm, probably not enough time to get my parts packed to go to Jake....
I'll get them over there sometime. |
DING-DING-DING-DING :D
We have a winner! I bolted the case halves together (with good thru-bolts this time) and the saddles are straight, the thrust surface is good, and no "syndrome". Guy almost scamed me on the shipping. He said it would go via UPS Ground for $52.00  . When it arrived, it had a FedEx label on the sorry box he shipped it in. Actual shipping charge was $25.21, and I brought this to the seller's attention. He said he will send a check for reimbursement  . |
Cool. :agree:
I hate it when I get stoinked on shipping. |
Excellent news, build it and hp will come.
|
Send it on down, all your other items are ready.....

Yetibone !!
Don,t forget to check the oil pump surface and the stump surface before you get it all together I haven't forgot my ordeal with to the oil leaks I had on my engine, It wouldn't hurt to double check the cam plug surface also. Im sure you know , But It dont hurt to remind . (talk is cheap) |
Thanks for the thought Blue. I bolted the halves together, and straight-edged the pump surface after removing the rest of the oxydation from the case, and running it thru a Cuda wash cabinet.
I still have lots of time to make it right before putting it together. My cylinders are out being re-sized for the pistons, heads are being ported, and big valved, the car it's going in is STILL down in the woods under a tarp, and my garage is full of moving boxes, and furniture :( . I anticipated this being a summer project, but with all that has hapened to me since February, it looks like this will be next winter's project  |
