Making my own rollcage!!!
Hi guys...
I'm here now for a small time but never really introduced myself, so here I go; I'm Wiebrand Bunt an 21 year student from Holland. I'm now for almost 2,5 years busy on my car. It's in full resto and still lays apart till the last bolt. My car is a 1303 S with an original 1600 engine. In the 2,5 years till now all the rust of the car is gone and is replaced with imitation or self-made platework. There are Remmele-look airintakes in the sides of the car. There are boxes welded on the back for mounting an aluminium highwing. There will be no interior except of 2 seats, an dash, and AN ROLL CAGE!! And about that rollcage I want to show you some pics of the progress of it. At first I picked up the 6 meter lengths of tube. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004221753.jpg Quite an length 6 meters http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004221839.jpg Testtube is bended and welded to getter.. looks damn nice!! http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004224705.jpg |
For making the tube at the B-style I maded an wooden mold.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004224941.jpg With an bender, digital angle-meter, level-instrument and an cupper hamer the first bendings are comming nice together. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004225516.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004225040.jpg The ending result on the mold http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004225616.jpg The ending result http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004225714.jpg The boxes for molding that tube to the car are maded. ANd the tubes is welded to the boxes http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004221301.jpg |
The other side
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004221239.jpg It looks so verry verry good!!! http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004221213.jpg From the front http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004221147.jpg http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004221106.jpg At every side the tube is molded to the boxes with 3 bolts http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004221038.jpg An testingtube is made of 40mm PVC-pipe. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004194942.jpg This is how it looks from the front http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004195047.jpg On this pic it's good to see how much bendings there are in only 1 tube. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004195205.jpg |
Steel tube is bended at the pvc-mold
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004195420.jpg From the front http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004195521.jpg Two pieces of tube are welded to the middle tube, so that teh above bended tubes later can be fixed on the middle tube. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004195823.jpg And bracked is welded to the chassistunnel so that in an later stadium the rollcage is also fixed to the chassis. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004224314.jpg |
An bracket is welded to the middle tube
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004224554.jpg So will it almost look like in finished stage. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004225000.jpg Detailed pic of it. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004225059.jpg Two brackets welded at the front of the car http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004225240.jpg Detailshot of one of the brackets. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2004225511.jpg The two brackets at the back of the car. Great Work !
I want to make a rear hoop for my fastback.
You get good results using that type of bender by the looks of things - surely must be good enough for a one off ? :agree: |
Nice work, good fit of the bars to the body. I need a hydraulic tubing bender like that, I already have the welder....

Fantastic work, it is looking excellent thus far, can't wait to see it progress!

So another update...
This afternoon I finally was free form school so I could work on my car.. Lot's of the prepwork was done on sundayafternoon (in an cold garage -> the heater was dead) At first we welded up the right box on the rear wheelarce. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005221434.jpg At the other side an backplate was welded in.. An yet another piece of foam was burned out  http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005221714.jpg The sideplate of this boxe is also made right and will be welded in tomorrow Also we welded the tubes from a-to b-pilar on there "footplates" http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005222916.jpg Also the left side is welded on the "footplates" http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005223036.jpg And the last thing that we did today was beginning at the making of our strutbrace. On every plate will be attached 3 tubes (if everything goes as planned) http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005223122.jpg I hope ya like it!! Wiebrand |
'Makes me want to cage my Kab...
Your making it look so easy! :agree: Matt |

But hell yeah.. in dutch: Met gezond verstand kom je een heel eind! (With healthy thinking you come an hole end) GRt Wiebrand |
Hey mates.. It's been an long time but here's an other update.
At first we had drawn where the tubes will go trough the "dashboardmetal" and cut that out. At this point I was lucky that I already had removed the "freshairbox" that is hanging in the boot under the frontwindow because otherwise the cage couldn't be coupled to the frontstruts. I also was obliged to remove the trunkhangs (do you call them so??). Tja The cage didn't fitted otherwise so hell yeah than the hangs has to get lost  Some pic of the tube that goes from the cage to the frontstruts seeing from the trunk http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005005022.jpg Pic of the interiorside http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005005136.jpg Detailpic http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005005213.jpg Two brackets made and welded on the plates to make the strutbrace. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005005420.jpg |
And here the totallpic of it..
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005005600.jpg And off course everything under supervision of my brother :D http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005005641.jpg Greetings Wiebrand p.s. Can that stupid *(&#^@ 30 seconds, and too much pics added in one post message not kicked on it's @$$??? |
nice work what kind of tubing are u using.
|
I use 42,4mm diameter tube with an thickness of 3,25mm. The tubes are "offglowed" after the bending/mold proces in the fabric so that there are no stressreflexes left in the tube. (I hope that you understand what I'm telling in my bad english)
WIebrand |
ik ook maar ik verstond het prima.
|
Is it the angle that this picture is taken
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005005022.jpg because it looks as though you might not be able to connect the fuel filler? I hope I'm wrong :( |
ANypne who can fab. a rollcage like this can fab. a new filler neck :agree:
|
Quote:
I know what you mean but I was thinking about the pump nozzels with the benzen (sp?) extractors(I think that's what there called), they have to fit all the way in the filler neck before dispensing the fuel. |
Quote:
Yep you have to think of everything, but that the nice thing of it. Wiebrand :o |
I like this !!!

|
GHE GHE.. curious Ben??
Today (after I've laid 4 days in bed because I was sick) finally there's done quite what.. But I've maked no pictures yet.. Sooooooo you have to wait till tomorrow :p Wiebrand |
So here's finally my update!!
At first we mate two brackets, that we welded to the boxes on the rearwheelarces. At first the leftside: http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005202016.jpg This is the right one http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005202124.jpg This gives the next total picture when the tubes is maked on mate.Looks nice if I may say by myself. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005202223.jpg |
Second we have made brackets that we one one side have welded on the strutbraceplates.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005202350.jpg And here also an total picture ofit seen from the trunk. http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...2005202514.jpg |
On the tank you also see the tube for the right side. Also are the brackets for this tube ready to be welded on the cage and on the strutbraceplate. So that one will be in next week.
I hope you liked it!!! :D  :D Grt Wiebrand |
