911 dash for a 1302...will this work?

I just recently had a set of 911/914 (5 gauges) restored and was wondering how I'm going to set them into my 1302's dash. I got my hands on a 911's dash from a friend and was thinking of cutting just the area where the gauges mount in. After some trimming and fitting I was going to either weld it in or weld some tabs on and fit it to my 1302. No matter what I would have to cut the original 1302's dash to allow them to fit. Has anyone tried this.....is there someone out there who makes a fiberglass 911 dash for a 1302 (I've seen them for a 1303....so maybe they exist).

i don't recall ever having seen a flat dash 911 conversion. i do think i saw a 914 dash eyebrow molded into a flat dash that looked pretty good. don't recall where though and i could be remembering all of this wrong. (i know, a lot of help, huh?) :o

I have seena 911 style dash on a flat screen, I think it was a proper 911 dash welded to the car. It was a carson topped beetle, black with peppermint sidepanels and polished fuchs. It has been on the UK show seen for years and has had a volksworld feature so you should be able to find photos of it...

I think I've seen that car.....and based on your description....that car was featured in either VW trends or HotVW's a few years ago. Looks like I've got some hunting to do :D

oasis December 6th 2005 05:41

It can be done, and has been done. In Keith Seume's excellent book, VW Beetle - The New Custom Handbook, there is a picture on page 78 of the German Look chapter showing exactly that. I have tried to scan and crop it for you below.

To make the above pic fit, I cropped out the accompanying caption. It reads:

Porsche 911 gauges work particularly well in a German Looker. This car has had a solid insert welded in place to accommodate the new instruments.

I think what Eviloval means is more something like the one pictured in the Tech Articles of this website: Die luftwaffe. They say it's a modified glass fiber porsche dash.

oasis December 7th 2005 10:00

Perhaps. No mention was made about any tech article, though. I was just answering the original post which was a plea for a more general answer.

kleinporsche is right on the mark.....I'm looking for something similar to a 911's dash. I know they make a setup that works with a 1303.....I just haven't seen when made for a 1302. I don't want the gauges to sit flat in the original 1302's sheet metal. Instead I want them to wrap slightly around the steering wheel. My original intention was to remove a section of 911 dash and mold/trim it to fit onto my 1302's dash without interfering with the steering wheel or the windshield.

kleinporsche December 8th 2005 16:04

I do not know if it will help but for 99$, glass action makes a dash that is not exactly like a 911, but it wraps around the steering wheel.

Maybe it's not worth the time and money to cut up your 911 dash...

EvilOval December 9th 2005 00:57

kleinporsche I had one of those in my old ghia years ago.....it was ok....but I really want the 911's dash (at least just the gauge cluster) intergrated into my car. I'm trying to hunt down the car ricola mentioned.....I've seen it before and also read the article it was in....just can't find the damn issue

I remember seeing something of this nature at the hoffmann-speedster website, in the fiberglass section. There is no picture, but it says 911 style dash for 1302. I remember sending an e-mail request to see if i could get a picture, but never got a reply. That was like a year ago. Also, im not sure the url for hofmann-speedster...google it.

nevermind, i googled it for you...

http://www.hoffmann-speedster.de/us/products.htm

just click here, go to gfk section, and scroll down towards the bottom, there is now a pic of the 1302 version..(wonder if that was cuz of me??)

hope this helps!!

there is a picture now on hoffman speedsters site.

Ive e-mailed the guys over there and asked about getting it shipped to the US and they said its a no dice.

SO we need somebody in the US to make a 911 style dash for the 1303. I remember Carbon joe was till he shut down. when i get back to Ca there is a VW buggie body manufactuing place in my home town (Fiber jet), and i will see if i could work with them to get a 911 style dash produced.

im making my own metal dash for my 1303... the following pics might help you a lot... Both show the same from the same angle but with different colour, so some details can be seen. might help you make a template to graft in your 1302 dash

Alt+f4,

Since I live over here in germany, get in touch with me about getting the dash you wanted

recessed flat dash

what if the gauges were recessed into the dash like on many late model cars. I know that most dashes now stick out into the interior of the car but that kind of look, and possibly angled for easier reading. I think it would be possible but would it be practical or useful cause I think it would look pretty cool personally.

krems February 15th 2006 12:26

is there any salvation for those with RHD cars? :(

the most i know so far i that the guys at Glass-Action are willing to modify thier classic dash into RHD.... but i really like the dash from hoffman

beetle1303 February 16th 2006 20:51

Do you mean: Why don't you "french " your gauges into your dash?

By that i mean of buckets of decreasing diameter (min is the gauge diameter) from the face of the standard dash towards the front...

or like a new car's dash?

Chris

ericglooker February 24th 2006 15:53

Not "frenching" in each gauge(s) into the dash I mean either using a gauge cluster from a moden car, like the new model porches, or a sube or something like that, or making a cluster out of after market gauges and recessing them to look like a set of gauges on a moden car. and then using the gauge cluster just as it would look in the original car. this way with the aguges farther back it would be easier to see mor gauges at once.

Baja Wes has just finished his dashboard with a modern cluster fitted behind a flat dash. He has pics on the aussieveedubber conversion forum

I have a sandblasted 911 gauge panel that I was going to put into my Ghia. It comes with all the gauges. I can email a pic if someone is interested. Make an offer.

EvilOval April 21st 2006 14:04

I've changed direction with this whole dash thing. Instead of trying to make the steel 911 section fit. I've made a fiberglass mold of it (just the area where the gauges fit) and will fit that to my dash. The removal bezel I'm making out of carbon fiber (which is the next part of the project). The gauge section will be removable (not bonded to the dash....just bolted from the inside) so I can work on fitting it with the steering wheel and clearance for my hands. If anyone has gone this direction I'd be interested in seeing some pics.

bshertzer June 28th 2006 21:09

i hate to bring up old posts... but oh well :D

has anyone here in the us successfully imported one of either the hoffman or csp fiberglass 911 style dashes? i know you can buy them, but from what i've read, the whole customs issue can be very costly at the least.

is there anyway to be able to get one of these style dashes here? unless there are other options (besides the glass action one) to work in a 1303?

thanks! Brian

Well its not perfect....but....I'm in the process of making my own from scratch. So far I've gotten it from door to door (this is an old pic....from about a week ago). Now I've got to figure out the bottom area of the dash and create the forms for it. The goal is to make one....then create a form of it so I can make a finished unit (out of fiberglass....with a few CF highlights). Once the CF supply catches up with demand or I find a big enough sheet of CF on ebay I'll make another completely out of CF.

poshbuggers July 18th 2006 12:44

Liking that a lot.

I'd love to do something similar for my '69 RHD bug.

EvilOval July 18th 2006 14:23

Its not that hard to do....once you have an idea of what you want it to look like. I've never used fiberglass in my life. But after purchasing a very ill fitting 911 shroud I ended up learning as I've gone. And while I've had a few setbacks here and there.....its been a fun experience. Anyways, here is a pic of the dash as it was 2 weeks ago (I'm working on the cover panel that will fit below the steering column).

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/alb...?pic_id=289070

Once the general shape is complete I'll go back over it and make some adjustments here and there before I create a mold of it. Once I've made the mold I'll make 3 of them. The 1st one will be used to figure out reinforcement points as well as the glove box. The second one will be a finished unit with CF accents at certain points and what isn't CF will be painted to match the body. The final one will be completely CF. I might be making a 1303 version since a friend of mine was asking if I could use his dash as the pattern and then modify it to house the 911's cluster. So, that might be another form that I have laying around till I get my own 1303.

EvilOval July 26th 2006 17:24

Well I was just about done. I have made a revision to the dash since I was mocking up the gauges and realized that I would have to cut a section of the dash to fit the tach and speedo. So (thanks to a mold that I took of the gauge cluster section) I have raised and pulled out the area that the gauges would fit to avoid cutting the dash and will lower the steering column a 1/2" to make everything fit. So, I'm redo'ing a few parts because of the change. Will have a few pics up....so if you have any ideas or suggestions please feel free to let me know.
