Hi all!
Finally I´m starting to rebuild my 03. The body has some bad spots that needs to be welded  and I´we decided to go with wider fenders and 18" instead of the 17" cup. New brakes, rollcage and some cf parts are sitting on the shelf whaiting to be installed after the paintjob.

Heres some pics of the progress, hope you like it. Please comment.

jrinlv March 13th 2007 20:19

good luck with your project, Lots of work, but you look like you have a good handle on it. How much did you pay for the replacement panel?
Good for you for getting together the parts you need, instead of waiting for parts, Good luck, it looks good JR

Scotts73SB March 13th 2007 22:49

Good luck with the project... before it was an inspiration for mine... and i am sure it will be again! Already lookin good and it aint even painted yet!:agree:

Thanks for your kind comments.

JR: I don´t know what the exact price for the panels is but I payd around 200$ for them.

Chris: Nope, the fenders are Kerscher. Remmele (or Carbon Joe) will supply me with the wider cf bumpers and runningboards and maybe front hood/lid.

What´s your opinion on the wheels?

Mathias

chug_A_bug March 14th 2007 20:05

I like the Wheels they look like a RUF wheel which is nice too
see... they make some Sweet Stuff
oh and about the fenders hmm ever heard of them B4
you have a website :)

Chris.

zeroaxe March 15th 2007 01:36

Nevermind the wheels.... What's your opinion about that garage!? Damn it's clean!!!(for a car being worked on, on top of it all!)

Thax Zeroaxe! I try to keep it clean. (at least when its camera time...;) )

Here´s the address to Kerscher: www.kerscher-tuning.de
They also do brakekits and other cool parts for our bugs. :)

boblebaard March 15th 2007 06:02

Mathias March 15th 2007 11:07

Bug Run is my Goal... Planning to have the car ready for paint in 3-4 weeks and then it´s only the fun part left - assembly! :)

This is if the engine will run...it has been standing still for two years now.

dirk.Gysbrechts March 15th 2007 12:14

johnnyvee March 15th 2007 16:34

SilverBullet March 15th 2007 21:30

Nice, very nice. What rim size and how wide tyres are you going to use?:) Waiting for your finished effort!:)

Mathias March 16th 2007 03:38

Thank you for the heartwarming coments.

The rims are RH Cuprad, 3-piece. 8,5x18 in front and 10,5 in the back :D
Should be 9,5" but RH sent the whrong rim...what can you say...

Tires will be 215/35 in front and 285/30 in the rear. Guess I will loose some horsepower on this setup but man does it look wide!

Zman March 22nd 2007 15:56

Where did you get you roll cage? It appears to be ceramic coated or is that polish alloy or stainless?

Thanks,
Gary

Hi Mathias,

First, I have to admit that this is one of the nicest projects I've ever seen and actually because I love your color choice!!
Is this the color that you've already painted the car and appears on the main photo gallery??

If yes, I'am interesting to have the details of this colour because I'm in the middle on resto of a 1303 project and I'd love to paint it with this particular colour.

Thanks in advance,
Jimmy

Mathias September 9th 2007 17:13

Cheers everyone! Sorry for not posting for some time... The project came to a standstill as my hands got numd and i visited my doctor who told me that I was stessed out and needed operation to get back on track
Funny, with three kids, a house from 1927 beeing rebuilt, my own company to run and some pet projects (1303 -75 and 1500 -67) I can´t understand why I´m stressed out

However the body is coming off soon and the work needed will be done with some help from my friend "evil notch" so have faith I WILL finish this MF this spring :)

PS. heres a cool link. Not GL but still lovers of the aircooled wonder...

Hello Mathias
Nice to see swedish GL project and a good one. Im also in a long time project. I will try to have it on the wheels next spring (i have said it for many years now). Hope you and your car get in shape for next season.

Hälsningar
Anders

Mathias September 12th 2007 15:11

Thanx Anders. As I´m waiting for my operation I can not do so much right now but I´m getting all the parts I need to finish. Right now I´m looking for a new gearbox, probably a 914. The body will come off soon and chassie after poudercoating will be rebuilt with new coilovers, Porsche brakes, 914 tranny and all other parts needed (read wanted  ) to make it a true GL.

Hi Mathias,

good luck with your operation. The project looks good. Had one car in the past that was a similiar style. Do also use the wings from Kerscher. They are of high quality. My current car is with 2 cm wider wings in the back and steel wings in the front which were pulled a little. It´s with 17 inch wheels from the Boxter and has a 914 5-speed in. The engine I have chosen in this case is the watercooled Subaru 2.2. For me and my wife it is a car that is used every day and so it was clear not to use a type 4 or type 1. The engine had 215.000 kms on the back when it was installed into the Beetle. We opened it and it looked nearly like new. There was nothing to be done on it at all. If somebody likes a watercooled Beetle, then this engine is a good alternative. Attached one little photo of the car. There was a report in VW Speed about it, which I have as a PDF. But unfortunatelly it´s too big for here. Hope ypou enjoy it.

Good luck!

Martin Bott

Mathias September 13th 2007 17:01

Thanx Martin. I must admit that I´we been thinking about Subaru conversion  I´m normally one of those who belives that a bug should be aircooled (or is it just an excuse :) ) however it´s a really nice car you have there.

Mathias.

Long time, no VW.

Yes I´m back. 2007 was a slow year for me since I´w had surgery to both my hands. I´m finally getting back on track now and guess what gets my attention first? :D

We have now taken the body of the pan. I´we orderd new floor pans that hopefully will arrive tomorrow. My friend had little to do this friday so he put together a rack for the pan. Easy to work on it now.

Next step is to weld everyting up and get the pan to the sandblaster and powdercoat.

Got some work done today! (well not me so much, more my friend) :o

Phat73VW February 4th 2008 17:02

:righton:
I just have to tell you that your car was one of my many inpsirations for both of my 1303s. Escpecially my latest one. I cant wait to see your car redone. I'm diggin the new widened finders with the lip!! The wheels are awesome too!!

Mathias February 5th 2008 03:44

Thanks Brian! Theres a lot of work to be done since the car sadly has been parked outside since 2000 and not been used since 2004...

Wally February 5th 2008 08:55

You doing the job right! Good to see the rust taken care of.

Glad to read your operation(s) went well!

Pls keep it aircooled, its more the real thing and hence more fun ;)

Mathias February 5th 2008 09:25

Staying true to the aircooled tradition :)

Some progress made today. Boxed and ready to be welded to the pan!

Bug@5speed(US) February 13th 2008 22:52

Mathias,

More pics please.

I am doing similiar repairs on mine, and curious as to your approach.

Do you think the ends where the two body bolts will be weak? Since it is not supported on the bottom via the lower frame head

Take care
Alex

Mathias February 14th 2008 03:46

Hi Alex.
I´m sure it will be strong when everything is welded together. We make a exact copy of original but put extra strength to it by boxing on the inside.

I´ve put my bug to the test on the track with original pan (rusty) and found no weakning points so this extra strength is just a bonus.

judgie February 16th 2008 13:37
