Oval on 19's pic

Heres a pic of my project...... no engine in the back to make it level, but you get the idea. I also have to narrow the front end some more and tub the inner fenders.

Sick, plain sick. Who in their right mind would modify a vintage VW??? :D

Mikey 1972GL June 6th 2004 19:19

That looks great, can't wait to see it finished. Please do keep us posted on the progress. :agree: :D

Panlelfantastic, ya smart*ss :D Your panel is BAD. What kind of power is that GM motor putting out?

By the way, it isnt a real oval so it took alot of the guilt away. I got it as an ex drag car with no rear clip. Dont ever try to weld in a oval dash into a square window car...... royal PITA (top lines up fine, bottom not so good  )

:D
Thanks! You are well on your way also...
My stock Eco puts out 170hp at the crank. Plans call for 350hp next year.

No guilt. It is your car and you can improve it any way you see fit.

They are 215 35's...... almost too skinny for the rims though.(7.5's)

Axl R June 25th 2004 22:30

Man , that car is going to be SICK when it's done . I am totally hyped on this car . You say its not a true oval - what year is it actually ? Also , What are you planning to put in it to make it go ? Definately keep us up to date on this project . I have to say I like the ovals the best for the bugs . Axl . :agree:

Where did you get your numbers for your Ecotec motor HP? I work for GM and they don't come with that much ponies stock . Axl .

boygenius June 25th 2004 23:16

I belive Panel is using a marine/off-road program for his computer... No emissions restrictions...

Not to be rude or anything , but isn't using a different program not considered stock anymore ? But I can go with the 350 HP figure , as GM has designed the Ecotec to handle upwards of 750 HP . The bottom end design came from the latest Corvette engine . Axl .

Well it very near stock anyway. That is the only mod to the engine to my knowledge but you might want to check with Panel first.

The ecotec engine will fail at around 400 hp. 383 hp if I remember correctly from the testing done on that engine for drag racing research. At 750 hp you need aftermarket crank/rods/pistons/head gaskets/head mods, intake and exhaust.

Panelfantastic June 28th 2004 07:02

Axl,
Boygenius pretty much nailed it. When I say I have a stock engine, I mean that the engine itself is stock. No header, no aftermarket cams, no nitrous, stock compression, etc. Yes I do have a different engine management than stock and it adds 30+ hp to what an Eco normally puts out. It's just an optimized marine program that still runs clean but makes power instead of being de-tuned to safeguard against a clueless public. I only mention it being "stock" because in the aircooled world you would have to really build an engine to make this kind of hp reliably and for the Eco it is only a starting point. With a trick head, cams, header, etc, making 225hp easy is already proven... with boost, even more. All this info is based on actual engines running in sand cars and is not reflective of what is possible for a GM car that has so many restrictions/limitations.

Axl R June 29th 2004 00:34

Okay , I can buy that explanation . Obviously things are going to have to be changed in order to achieve a higher HP output from any engine . I am just going by the numbers that the General is giving us . I am currently a GM Goodwrench Tech , and I get the opportunity to work on alot of the Ecotecs . They are a good engine from all that I have seen . The only piece of advise that I can give you is - if you change your own oil , DO NOT USE WATERPUMP PLIERS ON THE OIL FILTER CAP!!!!! I had a rental car come in from Enterprise rent a car that had just been serviced by an independant shop , and they cracked the oil cap by using waterpump pliers , and the engine eventually ran dry from all the oil leaking out of the cap . The engine was fried , and cost the shop who did the work alot of money to replace the engine in this car . It ended up being something like $15 thousand with labour and taxes when all was done . I ended up having to buy a socket just for the filter , so I wouldn't do the same thing . Axl .
