WBX 2.1L fuelinjection on a 2L type-4?
Is it doable and if it, is it better that the stock type-4 fuel injection?
I have this -79 fuelinjected 2.0L Type-4 (baywindow engine) and was concidering to use the fuelinjection system from a WBX instead. |
Hi
The manifold design on a WBX is nothing like a Type 4, the WBX inlet ports are basically the same as Type 1 motor only the ports are a little bigger. Steve |
Yes, well that much I allready knew.. ;)
Basically, what I was going to use was the injectors and all the equipment around them and fit them to the Type-4 manifolds etc.. ;) |
I have now built 2 aircooled engines with wbx injection works well if you combine parts one engine was turbocharged and although the Fuel injection could not really cope well it worked enough to give 180 hp

Thanks IMPI!
Could you advise me on what tempsensors etc. you have used for your engines? Just the stock typ-4 sensors or something else? Partsnumbers etc. would be great. |
This is what have happened since september last year:
In December I finally got the cooling tin mounted so I could start fitting the Wasserboxer fuelinjection plenum to the manifolds. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0148.jpg Had to bend the manifold tubes about an inch on the righthandside of the engine backwards(the ones closest to the camera). Otherwise the plenum would have sat a bit twisted and also to clear the intake rubber from AMM to the throttlebody. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0161.jpg The manifolds to the left bent, and the plenum on its correct place. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0142.jpg |
January this year:
Welded the mounts that bolts the WBX plenum to the type-4 case. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0321.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0320.jpg And test fitted WBX injectors I have. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0317.jpg |
In the mid January I started working on the exhaust.
Bought a pile of stainless steel 90 degree tubebends. 40mm OD and 37mm ID. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0367.jpg Had earlier bought a set of lasercut flanges: http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...6.jpg~original The started to make my own exhaust. Finding shorter exhaust studs was not the easiest task... They were M9 in the heads and M8 at the flanges... :eekno: So my Brother make me a set. ;) http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...0.jpg~original Here the first part of the exhaust is finished in mid February. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...3.jpg~original http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...5.jpg~original http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...6.jpg~original As you see in the last picture I also had plans on teststarting the engine with carbs first as I had a set of Type-3 carbs laying around. |
Got some more work done by the end of february:

Mid march I myself out to the garage again with new welding gas. 8)
As I was out pretty late I didn't take the time to finish off all welds but had to leave them as in the pictures. You start to see the finished product though. ;) http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0528.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0526.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0532.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0533.jpg |
End of March.
Started fitting the upper halves of the mufflers and also made the final exhaust tip. Not yet welded them though http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0549.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0553.jpg |
Mid April:
Finally got myself to the garage again after a few weeks off due to becoming a dad once again April 7th. :D Tied some fine stainless steel mesh around the perforated tubes. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0230.jpg Then started filling it with bike muffler glasswool. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0232.jpg Needed some bickering before I got all the fibers on the inside of the muffler. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0231.jpg Then fully welded the first muffler. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0234.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0235.jpg View from the underside when mounted. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0243.jpg |
April 26th:
Finished the exhaust. Just one little seam I couldn't weld from the underside will be next time I go to the garage. Now I just need to mount the cables so I can teststart the engine. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0283.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0280.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0282.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...n/DSC_0271.jpg |
This month I almost was going to chicken out from the WBX fuelinjection installation...:o
So I bought a pair of BMW 2002 Solex PDSI 36-40's that I fitted on the stock manifolds with a little help from my brother once again. ;) He made me a pair of spacers/adapters for them.. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...1.jpg~original http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f9...1.jpg~original |
One week ago I did the first teststart but it ran very bad.. Later that evening I remembered that I had left out the distance rings between the heads and cylinders (on purpose) but forgot to adjust the valves...:o
It was banging in both ends like firecrackers... :lmao::lmao: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URvqjW-FW4Y |
