Improving turning radius
 

Hi, I've got a 1974 standard bug with a steering box and wanted to know if there are simple ways of improving turning radius? I know I could put a rack and pinion in therebut that is too much fabrication. Any ideas? Btw, my wheels are 15x6" fuch up front with 195-50-15 yoko tires.

The limting factor is the wheels scraping on the bodywork or suspension, so adjust you lockstops so that you have just enough clearance.

No dumb questions, were all here to learn. They are on the beam near the steering box. Try jacking the car up and getting someone to turn the steering lock to lock, you will notice that there is a section on the pitman arm that will touch up against a nut & bolt section on the side of the beam, this is where you can adjust the lockstops. While your under the car have real careful look to see how close the wheels & tyres come to the body and lower control arm/sway bar on full lock, left & right. If you still have some clearance, you can wind the lockstops in a bit at a time.

also when adjusting the lock stops and checking for rub. look at the rubber brake lines...make sure they don't get near the tires. had this happen on a vert i am rebuilding.

Dropped spindles will move the wheels out 1/4 to 1/2" per side. That will give you more room between the tires & trailing arms allowing you to get more turn angle.
