Finally after a long time I Start to work on my car again.

I weld the steering to the chassis this is a easy work but the hard work was to find the correct place of the steering to have a descent bump steer and Ackerman effect.

Some pics of the Appleton steering:

Also I weld mountings for seats (very tight):

Hi Hugovw1976,

Nice cool ride you are building...

That Audi V8 engine and transmission, do you have the mesures for that, the buildt ind mechanical size (wide long and high and mountings are)

I am planing to build one midengine vw my self.

Kind regards

vwgeil

Adamus April 14th 2008 14:48

Hugo how much you spend on your bug?

Thanks a million :-)

Can I get you to mesure your frontsuspension arm's to both the upper and the lower arm and the hubs.

My plan is to draw everything in 3D first before building it.

Here are a couple of measurements from when I was researching an Audi V8 swap:
4.2l engine length: 464mm, 195kg
3.7l engine length: 516mm

from front of 4.2 engine to axle line of Audo FWD 5 speed: 25"

Hope that helps...

volkdent April 22nd 2008 15:35

Hugo, how bad did the bump steer turn out?

I'm worried that it's not good because the outer pivots on your steering rack are so far outboard of the lower control arm pivot points.

Jason

0.013" at full droop
Actully I have to make longer the steering rack (6"). Because with the shorter rack the bumb turn in so bad.

volkdent April 23rd 2008 21:57

Oh good!!! Longer is easier, shorter is not, so that's good. I think you must have a much better concept of suspension geometry than I do, I think I would need a lot of help building a suspension from scratch as you have. Keep us posted.

The length also depend in the position of the tie rod on spindle, in the case of the Corvette C4 spindle the position is far away of the imaginary line between uper and lower ball joint.

I hope this illustration help to explain.

Please please please let there be updates!

Truly bad f-n ass, to the point where i started searching for a bug. haha

Do the Rotary plans include the suspension components design?

AIRSICK July 24th 2009 23:30

Wow!

That is MOST AWSOME!

Thank you for Sharing it with us!

Finally some litle progress:

Steering column, steering, pedal assembly.

Brake lines.

http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/1073/dscf0008vs7.jpg

Upgrade rear suspension geometry (Move back 1").

Before:

hugovw1976 August 15th 2009 16:38

And finally I mount the rear coilovers with rocker arms:

Very impressive build! BTW how do you control roll? I see no facility for anti-roll bars

That's the next step.

Adjustable sway bars.
But I don't calculate the bar rating yet.

evilC August 21st 2009 04:46

With the general sophistication of your suspension don't confine yourself to the standard bent bar with holes in the end. This cries out for a hollow bar and blade adjustment at the front and a very short roll bar activated by the rockers at the rear.

Whats the rates for the rear suspension units?

Right now have 400 lbs in front 600 lbs rear but I need to ride my car to know if this are the correct rates. ( remember the principal purpose of the car is road race no street).

I want to install a bar with adjustable arms like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT

or this

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

evilC August 24th 2009 05:30

The springrates will of course be determined by the wheel rate, weight and the desired frequency. The prinicple being to keep the springing soft and the damping firm (Chapman principle).

I had a look at the Nascar units but I would have thought that with a development car that the blade type anti-roll bar would give a greater range of adjustment. The Nascar units might be far to stiff for a lightweight bug especially as they are very heavy and circulate on banked ovals at 200+mph. The roll force must be particularly high.

kraM October 21st 2009 08:28

Hey Hugo,

I first saw your car on the rorty site.
I wish I had the time and money to build a mid-engine monster like yours but i suppose that my 1600ACVW motor will have to do for now :)
Keep up the good work man and all of the best and good luck for the rest of the build.
Cheers

hugovw1976 January 4th 2011 22:42

I start to work on my car again:

Cut the car to have easy access to the engine bay (like vw fun cup's cars).

http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/7601/r4211.jpg

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/1061/dcfc0006y.jpg

http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/509/dcfc0007l.jpg

New wheels 18 x 8.5 - 225/40/18 front 18 x 11 295/30/18 rear:

http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/6733/dscf0002x.jpg

And wating for a shoop delivery my engine components fully balance. Pictures soon.

You know him? I love that thing! How does it handle? Any idea what sort of HP he's got?

Jason

70Turbobug January 9th 2011 07:10

Yes,he´s a very good friend of mine. The car handles very well.He didn´t build it as a strict drag racer,it can corner just as good as most sports cars.Right now he´s pushing around 600-650hp and hasn´t reached full boost yet.The twin turbos spool up to about 1.2-1.4 bar and he´s finally able to get 0,8-1,0 bar without pulverising the transmission. He estimates it will do about 700-750hp.The tiptronic seems to hold up well even though it was a nightmare to programm. He has done everything himself except the engine and mapping. He´s not an engine buff, but he is an expert in fabricating. It looks like a 1200 beetle, but it´s actually a 1302 - the body has been modified to look like a 1200.The wheelbase is still 1302.It is brutal and incredibly stable.

No I don´t have any pictures that are up to date, you can actually see more in the videos on you tube than what I have, sorry. There will be a feature of this car next month in the German VW Scene magazine. He will also be in Hannover,Germany at the Maikäfertreffen on May 1st - look for the Bug-Talk Banner the car will be parked right next to it on display.
