External regulator to internal regulator Alternator wiring

My Alternator just gave up charging. I went to a vw parts store and they only have the internal regulated alternators. To make the change from Ex to Internal I have to rewire the wires from alternator to regulator, and I don't have the wiring diagram to do this. Has anyone done this before any help would be appreciated.

Hi

Your old external voltage regulator will have a thin blue wire coming off it, the thin blue wire goes all the way to your charge light in the speedo. The later alternator with the internal voltage regulator has 2 connections, one thick one and 1 thin one.

You need the thin connection on the alternator with the internal voltage regulator hooked up to the thin blue wire on your old regulator, the easiest way to do this is to use any one of the 3 wire in the plug on your old alternator, these 3 wire run back to the old voltage regulator, don't use the brown one that's earth on the alternator body.

The thick wire from your old alternator bolts onto the larger terminal pn the new alternator.

What about the rest of the wires back at the old regulator, besides the blue thin one? Do you connect them all together?

Hi

The leftover wires aren't needed, just remove them from the old voltage regulator and tape them up. The thick red wire on the alternator is a feed from the alternator to the battery so that circuit needs to be there.
