901 with T1 motor
 
How well does a 901 tranny work with a T1 motor? Was planning on using a t4 motor in my 61 rag, but that got put on hold. Will a 1600 or 1700 t1 have enough power to make use of the 901?

The gearing for a 911 trans might be a little tall. A 901/902 5 speed from a 912 should work well.

The tranny is a 901 converted from a 914, haven't tracked down the gearing yet.

To add to the questions.

What throw out arm and pressure plate are used in such a conversion?

I am looking at a 901 with T4 though which is a little different.

Hopefully picking up two 901s this weekend. Not sure of origin though, I guess 914s.

With a 901 and a t4 motor, you can use the 914 flywheel and bits.

I need to find out what to do to a T1 flywheel to use the 901, seem to remember something about the pilot bearing.

ive found the best way round this is to use a wasserboxer crank either 69mm or if you can find one 76mm from 2.1, this has type4 5 bolt fixing so can use 914 flywheel. to fit this in type1 case machine centre and rear main to type4 size. hey presto !regards Lee.

Big DUH on my part. Thanks for pointing out the obvious :silly:

I was thinking in terms of the T1 tranny and the starter would not fit the teath of a 914 flywheel.

With a 901 tranny the 225mm flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate will be perfect.

Sometimes I get wrapped up in details and forget to take a step back for the obvious!

901 gearing
 
The 901 gearboxes which have come from 911's have lower gearing than the 901's which come from 914's.
The reason... the 6 cyl engine revs more and that is where the power is.
The 4 cyl has more power down low... so if you want higher gears... use a 914 box and convert... if you want closer gears and about the same overall final drive as a GT Bug box... go for a 901.

914 gear ratios
 
The 914 gearbox ratios are as follows,

1st (11/34) 3.09:1
2nd (18/34) 1.89:1
3rd (23/29) 1.26:1
4th (27/25) .92:1
5th (31/22) .71:1

Final drive is (7/31) 4.429:1

All 914 gearboxes from the factory (4 cyl) had the same ratios whether they were tailshift or sideshift.

914/11 was the tailshift up to 1.10.72
914/12 was the sideshift box from then on.

Both can be converted but the later sideshift box needs a lot more parts to do it.

Wow, I didn't know you could use a 914 box in a bug! How do you get the ring gear to rotate in the opisite direction (mid engine drivetrain converted to rear engine drivetrain) Can the whole differential carrier assembly be removed, flipped over and reinstalled with the ring gear on the other side of the pinion ?
Which is easiest to use, the old tail-shifted ones, or the later side-shifted ones?

You got it....Flip the ring gear and replace the nose cone with a 901 piece. The tail shifter is the trans to use. The nose cone is hard to come by at a decent price. In the long run, I think it is cheaper to get a 901/902 from a 911/912.

Is it possible to use a T1 engine with T1 flywheel on a 901 transmission, or would the starter/ring gear mesh not be possible?
Also, will the input shaft fit into a T1 gland nut?

This is probably a stupid question.

Short and simple, it fits and you can use the T1 starter.
