I have these 87 944NA parts, what can i do with them
 
I have all these nice parts out of what i was told was an 87 944NA. I had some suggestions to replace the majority of the rear parts of this to go into my 64 type 2 double cab. I was also told to only keep the caliper and carrier in the front and get early 944NA hubs.

I was told to use the 83-85 944NA parts instead but was wodering if anyone has used these parts below in an IRS install or has any suggestions on installing any of the parts in my bus. I am not opposed to cutting or welding, so dont be shy.. I have all this stuff and would like to use it but if i have to roll back the the early 944 parts I will if it is the best bet. I realize the 944 front parts i have cannot be used without machining as well.

I would save them for a type1 platform, or sell them. The calipers are the only thing you could use for a early type2. The trailing arms are way to wide to fit under the wheel wells. The '87 and later front hub's have the largest offset of 944's. I have all the same stuff you have pictured from a '87 T. (hub's and trailing arms are the same for '87 NA and T) It is all on my '70 type1, and were all too wide for my future '62 single cab project. You need '85 and earlier backing plates for steel arms and '85 and earlier hub's. You can go NA, or Turbo.

Thanks so much for sharing, Lanner and I have already spoken and he suggested the same as you did, i was just curios if there were alternative ways to install them.

A fellow GL'er offered me a set of 86 turbo arms.. would they work??

If you are down for a little cutting and welding, Pantswagen has put the alloy arms in his bus by using the whole 944 torsion assembly:

I was thinking about doing this, bus i was scared it will make the back end to wide.

hello
-your 64 will have the inner strengthening do-nuts on the inner parts of the torsion housing to chassis
-these are not welded inside-ie the chassis to tube

-so
-pull out the stock bars
-witha recip saw greased up -slice throug the torsion housing athe the outer chassis
-on the inner cut through the wld
-the half way through the hole in the chassis
cut horisontal a few inchs over
-cut down at an angle to the width of the tube
at the 944's inner pivotts - measure the width of the frame horns of the split
-cut a line off the pivots
-drill holes in horns to remove bolts
cut split torsion off frame horns

-cut split shock mount off

cut off 944 arcing body mount
drill and tap 944 hoousing for trans mount
-cut off roll bar mount-it will be whaere chassis is
-wed in 944 torsion
-insert worn blades and tack th dove tail in

note - don't even bother spinning the spring plates
-leave it stock - its perfect
-
now you will 'HAVE' to get 85.5 hubs and the 29 discs - 4 pots
-you dont need the stub axles-they are the same

you will need to fabricate new shock mounts
-BUT as you have narrowed the springplate locals
-the shock mounts to the inner chassis now anyway!!!
-fit trekker cups
-54cm is the driveshaft length
-the t25 vanagon has these stock
use the sheaths from the 944
-simplypull the torsion end off with pliers - cut sheath down
-the end fits the splitty chasss

after all that though
-you can only fit ONE wheel
-and its 16 inch 993 wheel - et70
-or a 17 inch cup 2 9j 70et
-you can run a 255 tyrs though - they still just fit against the springplate

-ie they become bhu width

just do it if you have the torsion housing
-do not take the springplates off

the inner chassis will leave you a nice clean hole to line up
-you won't even have to get it re aligned

-the alloy arms have built in lowering
-you cant turn them anyway
-as if you do run a ten inch tyre

-IT WON'T SIT FLAT
