In a previous article, we introduced you to the JSport light blue race beetle owned by Mr. Shigeo Osamura. This time around, we are going to tell you its street legal counterpart this dark blue 1303 you see here in these pictures.

The basis for this project is a 1973 1303S and it incorporates many parts from Jsports extensive line of performance products. The car is used as a test vehicle to help with the development of new parts that are going to be used for the street.

The first thing you notice about this car is its stunning body work. It uses a Jsports bumper / spoiler in the front and a painted bumper in the rear. Its running boards are carbon fiber and also made by Jsports. Rounding out the exterior is a Jsports carbon fiber duckbill spoiler that keeps the engine dry and also gives some extra stability in the rear.

The power behind this street fighter is a 2165cc Type 1 motor that uses a 78mm counter weighted Gene Berg crankshaft connected to Mahle 94mm pistons using Pauter aluminum rods. Closing the gaps are light weight Total Seal rings. Heads are genuine VW castings that have been ported and polished and modified to use 42mm x 37mm valves with SS springs.

Cam and rocker duties are performed by an Engle FK10 cam and Gene Berg 1:1.45 ratio rockers respectively.

Dual Weber 44's supply the much needed fuel and air that is required by an engine of this magnitude. While exhaust gases are extracted by a Pheonix header system that is connected to a Jsports muffler setup.

All of this power is transferred to the ground using a lightened flywheel that is connected to a 2100lb. Kennedy performance clutch and pressure plate. The tranny is a custom unit built by Jsports that uses a 4.375 ring and pinion with a Quaife differential. The gear ratios are as follows: 1st 3.8, 2nd 2.06, 3rd 1.20 & 4th .89.

Mr. Osamura's car rolls on 17" P1 racing wheels with low profile tires. The suspension has been lowered via Jsport adjustable strut kit in the front and turning the splines in the rear. Tying the front end together is a Jsports strut tower bar which everything nice and tight upfront.

Special thanks go out to Yuki for all his help with this article. To check out J-Sport go to www.ne.jp/asahi/jeffreys/vw/
