Home made coilover 944T/Golf I/CRX
3 Attachment(s)
Hi
Im converting my 1302 S to alu arms and 944 T brakes font and rear. I made my own coilover to fit the 944T spindle and lower the car at the same time. To do this I used a Golf I shock absorber and a coilover kit from at CRX. First I cut off the leg just above the mounts for the spindle. And put a 48mm pipe into it and welded. I added some pics |
hooray for innovation!
so is the coilover kit for the rear of a crx? i had heard that's how to go because the spring rate is more favorable to the light vw front. can you tell yet how stiff it'll be? |
Cool, I did the same, but just used bug struts..

It will be on the stiffer side for road use, but i think it will work for track use. When i put my weight (80kg) on the front end, it lower the car about 10-15mm. The stiffnes of the springs in my CRX kit are rear 350lbs/inch and 450lbs/inch front. The black spring is just for helping keeping it thogether and you could press it thogether with your hands. Chris Very nice struts. where did you find the threaded part? Made it yourself? Its easier to find threaded parts and kits for bug, golf and N/A 944. They have a smaler diameter of the "pipe". 944 T have 52 or 54 mm outside diameter And I couldnt find such threaded part. Therefore I put a smaller diameter pipe inside. |

those spring plates from rally design make it so easy, and they cheap too!. chris, what spring rate are you running on the front now? i tried 80 as i thought that was standard for beetle, but now on 100. mines a street car.

They are 10.5" by 130lbs, they felt pretty spot on, and not too stiff..
|
cheers i'll try some out. i use 12inch springs. i used mk 1 golf struts as a base, they are 2 inch shorter to start with and have camber adjustment bolt holes.
|
Yay! Go the Rally Design Strut conversion crew! That makes 3 of us. My struts were originally 944 struts, since I had them around, the Gaz inserts I bought were the same, and they have the camber adjustment at the bottom. I *think* I've got 150lb springs on there, and a pair of 200lb springs that I had recommended to me discarded in the garage.

200 would be great for a Golf!
