possible inexpensive roof spoiler

Could this be used as a roof spoiler similar to the Remmele one:

I imagine it would work well enough, but I don't have the knowlegde of aerodynamics yet. Anyone with some insite?

Alex July 26th 2002 22:11

I would not risk it. It is for the 914 engine lid and the roof of the bug is more curved than that. I know that CarbonJoe will be working on a roof spoiler soon.

Are the 914 units made of a flexible material? It looks like the same type of material as 944 spoilers. The ones that I have seen aren't very stiff. Could that flexibility be age related (they were '86/'87 944's)? Maybe they would conform. If not, I guess I'll save my pennies for Joe's CF spoiler.

super vw July 31st 2002 20:41

Yes the 944 ones are flexable... but not sure on that 914 one.
Personaly i would wait for Carbon Joe to create one, well just look at it this way... it would be carbon fiber right!

Carbon Joe August 1st 2002 00:43

Yes, tomorrow the drag car that I'm sponsoring gets dropped off at my shop, wile it's getting the full carbon fiber treatment I'll be working on the mold for the roof spoiler. Wile I'm designing it I would like to know your opinion on incorporating a third brake light in it, good or bad idea? Either way when I prove the mold and I'm happy with it I'll be offering them in 100% carbon fiber and a pantable fiberglass.
Thanks,

How about making 2 spoilers.....one with and the other without the brake light?

Alex

I would just build one mold for with a blank spot for an "optional" 3rd brake light, somehow smooth/incorperate it into the design so it would still look good if the user chose NOT to cut out for a 3rd light.
Saves you time and money...

Bobby74,
That's sounds good, I just got the car in my shop, so tomorrow I start working on the mold. I'll keep you posted on the progress.
Thanks,

Neat-O!

Derrick from NC August 4th 2002 20:40

Joe,
Make it with a 3rd brake light installed.....if not provide part numbers to the correct factory 3rd brake light that will fit correctly in the spoiler.

I will be installing one of your roof spoilers my GL.

Carbon Joe August 6th 2002 08:53

Great idea Derrick, I'll start looking around for a string of small LED lights to use. If anyone finds any thing that can be used please pass it along

zen August 6th 2002 21:27

No, that 914 spoiler goes on the trunklid, and is glass, not rubber, have one.

Is anyone familiar with vortex generators here?

little 1-2" blades that stick up/out, commonly used on aircraft. (usually at a 22 degree angle to the airstream, as I recall)

I always thought those Iin an array on a bug roof would help get more air into a stood off decklid, but that they would look bizzare and likely only work at high speed.

(Oh yeah, used on some rally cars ahead of a spolier, like on the roor with a trunk mounted spoiler)

SilverBullet August 20th 2002 07:49

It would be nice if you could incoporate a 'shark-fin' antena with the roof spoiler with brake lites. The ones used on new bmw n saabs. Just a suggestion.:)
