Help Me Identify This??

Is this transmission a 915? Its for sale by a private seller he's asking $1000 but i could probably talk him down quite a bit. he claims its off a 76' porsche 911 and posted the following pictures.

Is this a 915?Also what type of things should I look at when I go buy it? what are things that will let me know if its no good etc.?

Thank you guys for your help. - John

It's a 915 ;) . Check for leaks at seals, and crack's in cases. Spin one of the out-put flanges to see if it spins free. Really the only way to know is a partial tear-down. (like draining oil and taking nose cone off)

thank you very much how can i tell if its a 4 speed or a 5 speed? are all 915's 5 speeds?

I think they are all 5 speeds. If it hasn't been drug around on the ground to much, the number is stamped on the bottom of the differential case on the biggest rib. There are other numbers on various parts of the cases, but they are just part numbers, not the I.D. of the tranny.

I am gonna start looking for a 915 over here.

I am not familiar with them, so can I ask for someone to advise what numbers to look for

I want to be sure before I make any offers....

try to find a late model 915 these will have the 8:31 ring and pinion, which I think that you will like far more then the 7:31. Numbers on the bottom will be 915 / 61 and up. I would avoid a Mag box (magnesium) as these tend to have issues with intermediate bearing failure, as well as side plate blow out.

Just my two cents. Let me know if I can be of any help.
