G50 in 1956 oval bug
 
Hey there,

I come from Holland and was sent to this forum by Wally. I got some problems with the installation of my G50 transmission in a 1956 oval window. Now You al think of course you got problems with that :lmao:

To the point,
I was planned to use original steel bug IRS arms. But now I’m putting al the parts together using the type 1 944 driveshaft’s it seems that the shafts are to long.
Has anyone got any tips how to solve the problem?
1 solution came from Wally, he told me I could use the aluminum 944 arms.
But I really want to keep the wheels as close to each other as possible.

Does anyone knows if there are some shorter original Porsche, VW ore whatever which manufacturer it is, driveshaft’s available?

How long is too long? The 944 auto box has unequal length drive shafts. I have a pair at home so I will measure open and closed length of the shorter one for you.

Use early 944 axles, they are a small amount shorter than type 1 and have been fitted with your combination of parts before...

What engine are you fitting, looks like it will be pushed back a fair amount with the trans fitted in that position! Would like to hear your other plans too..

The short one is 475mm-525mm flange to flange

Hey,

Thanks for your fast reactions.
Im not sure witch driveshafts I am using at this point.
I made some measurements and a picture so we al measure the same.
In the closed length is 380mm and the open one is 425mm

Maybe I know someone who can give me a early 944 axle so I could fit it. I hope so.

The engine I am putting into it at first wil be an 2387cc type 1 with ultrawedgeport heads and fuel injection.
There are some plans t put water/methanol into it as wel, but thats just an idea.
I will let you know something more soon when I have a litle more time, I`m a bit in a hurry now so.
Than I sent some pictures in here to.

Hi Nick,

Usually driveshafts are measured without CV's on them, but either will work if you have a good reference ;-)
Maybe you took in too much of that green bottle when you measured huh?

Is your driveshaft about perpendicular to the cars length axis?

Yeah, thats for sure:D

I realy didn`t know that the measurement of the axis had to be done without the CV`s. I measure again later.

The driveshaft is not perpendiculat to the cars length axis, although (in my opinion) it`s not realy far out of it. I`l shall take a picture wright from above down onto the transmision so you can see.

I took a few pictures for you, but I lost my cable so I can't get them out of the camera. Anyway, the early 944 axles are about 7mm shorter than the type1 ones.
