RETRO GERMAN LOOK (was:THIS is what I'm trying to do to my car.)

The look i'm going for is...
Well, It IS theoreticaly still germanlook...sort of.
It's actually a weird hybrid.
I'm mixing old with new.
kinda like mixing "CyberPunk" techy stuff with "SteamPunk"
stuff...Ok...I bet about two people understood that.
I guess think..."modern Porche touring look mixed with old school cafe racer" or "Vintage racer meets high-tech augmentation" OR "the train and the Delorian from the Back to the Future movies"(more the train than the Delorian)
That help?
Let me know what you guys think of this.
I want that hardcore spartan look of a serious vintage racer
with lots of leather and metal with all the tech/modern stuff hidden, but with a modern set of rims.
ARRRRRRRRRRRRGH! by brain hurts now.
If someone understands me please help.

 That's my kind of message, crazy and mixed up. no offence.

as for the look, it sounds cool. I think I understand, and I'll have to see pictures when it's done. ;)

I think I understand. You want an old school GL with hidden modern technology. Sorta the way car builders dress up older cars with modern parts that still look "vintage or period" and fit the era of the car. Kinda like a satillite radio that looks like an old factory radio. :)

Uber Affe May 5th 2004 01:20

Well, I guess you would be the two...heheh

Yes, That radio analogy is just about perfect.

Sweet... ;)

I'm picturing the giant machine from the movie Wild Wild West (with Will Smith). Lots of levers, switches, mechanical do-dads mixed with alot of wires and monitors. I googled "cyberpunk" and "steampunk" (because I've never heard those terms before) and got a good link to Wikipedia.org.

If I'm interpretting correctly, I think you may be thinking outside Germanlook. While you have the technology part correct, it seems the tech is for the wrong reason. Germanlook (the way I understand it) is including any technology that helps the car go fast, turn fast, and stop fast, with functional styling thrown in to blend it all together. I see alot of gadgets in your style being there just for the sake of being there. Maybe. I could certainly be wrong about all of this. I'm just trying to understand what you are going for. It sounds like you've got a new look starting up and I'd like to see what you come up with.

Then again, you said all that tech stuff is hidden. As long as the tech stuff is engineered in the german tradition and becomes seamless with the operation of driving, it just might work as GL. I like the idea of putting modern electronics and conveniences into an old Bug, like turning an old broken Sapphire into a modern XM radio. Stuff like that would definately fit the spirit of Look.

Hmmm, now I'm really curious to see the results.

Another way to look at it...

3 Attachment(s)
Ok...consider the "modern/retro" styling of the new mini or the audi TT.
Consider the appearance of the 356 Porsche dash.
Consider the appearance of the old 57 xk jags.
squash as much of all of these together into a beetle
and shove as much tech as you can into it with out changing the look too much. NOW...
Take a look at all things German from the 20's -30's.
Explode the car and rebuild it with leather staps and metal "o-ring" accents & bezels all metal knobs (no plastic)
Keeping all extraneous bits off so everything looks simple and handmade and as though it has a prupose...
BUT...keep as much tech in it as possible...
Hide stuff. Use and MP3 player (hidden)
Use a high tech dash and guages, but present them in an antique way. ....yeah.
See pics

I know exactly what you are talking about. :D

Maybe the analogy of a 60's Bond (007) car would help. They looked simple, elegent, classic and they had all the latest technology, real or invented in them.

Uber Affe May 6th 2004 21:08

Affe...UBER Affe. heheheh

ya! Vee likes et!!!
The bond car...the BEETLE Bond car! Sweet!
What if they handed Mr. Bond a VW Beetle instead of an Aston Martin? What would it look like?

Kinda what yours is going to look like. You need the iced champaine dispenser with the glasses in the center console.

Although you can only use that if you have a designated driver. ;)

I'm sure there is a color in between, Just go car shopping to see what you can find that you like.

Uber this idea for your car sounds cool. I am still working out many ideas for my car it is funny how many of us want an "orginal" GL bug but if you think about it how many GL bugs are in your city?

Ok i take from your silence that is the same as in my city.... none lol so any GL bug will be orginal to the niave natives of our poor GLess citys. I say go for what floats your boat!
