Parts for 5-speed conversion

I am in the process of planning and gathering parts for a 5-speed conversion
in my outlaw Porsche 356. Since most of the rear suspension parts on the
car came out of the VW parts bins, the dimensions are essentially the same
as those for a swing axle VW. The suspension conversion will use the steel
control arms, spring plates and misc hardware from an early 944.

Deliberate choice of the steel control arms over the alloy because shock
mounts will have to be fabricated and welded to the control arms. I can
weld steel but do not have the skill to weld the alloy parts.

The motive power will be a healthy 2366cc T-4

I have been searching the GL archives and there is a wealth of information
there. What I want to do here is get confirmation on what I think I have
gleaned relative to CV's, axles, and flanges.

The tranny is a 911/01 with 108mm (96mm bolt circle) flanges. So it looks
like I will need 930 CV's at both ends of the half shafts/axles and 28 spline
axles of "stock length"--16.25".

Empi appears to have 2 varieties of stub axles that mate to the 930 CV's--
one with a relief for the CV backing plate, and one without the relief.
Which raises the question of why would you want to install the CV without
the backing plate?

So on to questions-----

1. Is the 16.25" axle the correct length? Will the extra thickness of the
930 CV's have any effect?

2. Who, besides Empi, supplies stub axles that mate to the 930 CV's?
Steve Arndt mentions ERCO but I have not been able to find a vendor.
Who sells them?

3. Some suppliers appear to be sizing the 930 CV bolt holes to use
0.375" dia bolts rather than 10mm. Are the stub axle makers also doing
this? Anyone know who is and who is not?

4. Anyone have recommendations for vendors of CV's and stub axles?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, why don´t you change the axle flanges? You can have them in 100 mm for Porsche 944 drive shafts or you can also have them for Beetles shafts. Even the Bug´s shafts will stand the torque of a 2.4 engine. Have some customers who drive the Bug-shafts with the 901/914- gearbox in combination with type 4 engines with 2.7 litre.

Look on my site www.bugat5speed.de and if it interests you, please contact me via e-mail (no PM please). Do send to the US - no problem.

Ask others for my products if you like. Have just send some conversion parts to the US for a 356 Outlaw-project.

Cheers Martin
