912 Gearing in a Type IV Bug

I've got a 69 bug that I'm currently having a 2.4 type IV engine built for. It should put out close to 200bhp. I just recently picked up an aluminum case 912 5 speed tranny. My mechanic opened it up to reveal 911 gearing (short).

This car's going to be used mostly for spirited city driving. I'm just wondering if the stock gearing is going to be close to what I need.

Thanks-

Craig,

I believe if its a 912/1 its going to be too short.. unless you plan on doing rallies or such.. I had a similiar box, and ended up selling the gears..

Turns out it's a 902/02 with afmsx gear stack. Is that stock 912 gearing?

Craig,

afmsx is much too short for this type 4.
I recommend a/f/n/v/zd. That´s 914.

Try to get hold of an early 914 gearbox (nose-shifter pre 1972).

The tranny is already rebuilt with a limited slip. We (Wevo and I) decided to run these stock gears to see how I liked them with whatever my final wheel size lands being. Aside from the uncertainty of wheel size, we also based this decision on the fact that I'm looking for a fun street car that low end acceleration is much more important than top speeds. I'll most likely start off with a fairly tall tire on a 17" wheel.

Are these 911 gears?

Thanks-
Craig
