Anyone Using A 993 Turbo Tach and Speedo in one?
I think one of my biggest gripes about my 1303 is that gauges and dash layout. But I saw a youtube video of a Subaru swapped Bug running a 993 Tach and I think it would look great in the stock dash. It would be interesting to make it work on a stock bug or even a subaru swap later. The big problem I see is that I do not know how to get the speedo signal without a subaru swap or make the tach read correctly for a 4 cylinder engine with or without a subaru swap.
I guess this has lots of functions built into it but if the Speedo, Tach, Odometer and maybe even trip are all that work that would be enough for me Take a look at 2:28 and mute it (only crappy youtube music here) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSR-roNVhX0 or here http://www.911pcar.com/Porsche_Parts/IMG_1118.JPG project can be found here http://aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=66118 http://a391.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...75b5f46f6e.jpg |

Hi
Spa from the UK make a combined tacho & speedo, they have US site as well which I've found cheaper at times. Steve |
LOVE the dash in that beetle :D ..... I'm in the planning stages for my dash and was working on the exact same layout.
993 tach and 7" touch screen. I have a microcontroller interpreting the signals from my S60 pro and passing it through the Innovate Motorsports MTS data chain, on to the 7" touchscreen. 30 selectable data channels  Sandeep |
Oh...my. I think you have just found my new dash upgrade.
I believe the 993 Tach would use a square wave input signal for the tach, so it's a matter of adjusting the input signal to match. The following unit is a speedometer calibration unit, but the basic premise is the same, and this unit should work on a tach signal. You would need a dwell meter or a known-good 4cyl tach. Hook both it and the 993 up, and adjust the 993 signal to match the dwell meter. Once it's set, it's set. Note that this is a kit, and would require some electronics knowledge to assemble. http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=KC5435 Alternatively you could install a potentiometer yourself...or we could be lucky and the 993 has one already http://www.mindspring.com/~jayk3/toyota/tachmod.htm For the speedometer, the 993 is going to use an electronic input, which you can easily duplicate. You will, however, need a second speedometer adjustment unit as the "pulses per mile" off your bug setup is sure to be different from whatever Porsche was using. For a speedometer sensor this mount and hall-sender ring is the hottest setup I've found so far, and will be installing on my own bug: http://www.pacificcustoms.com/mm5/gr...c957810m_2.jpg http://www.pacificcustoms.com/mm5/me..._Code=featured http://www.pacificcustoms.com/mm5/me..._Code=featured http://www.pacificcustoms.com/mm5/me..._Code=featured -Dave |
Interesting, thinking about this last night I remembered seeing a vdo speed sensor box back in 2004 that screwed into our existing speedo cable. Sadly I cant find it anymore. It was on the now dead http://www.customoffroad.com.au/partFull.asp?partid=99
I had written down the VDO part number as 412.009 but I can find it. But I had all so written down that there was something similar available from Summit Racing here in the US. I just havnt found anything there yet To help you guys out here is where I found more info on this 993 turbo tach, its features and even how to wire it up to a non turbo 993 http://p-car.com/diy/obc/ If you beat me to it maybe you can put together an article for GL, I am a grad student (poor) after all |
Looking at the Pacific Customs site I found just what I was talking about...
http://www.pacificcustoms.com/mm5/gr...ac957800_2.jpg http://www.pacificcustoms.com/mm5/me..._Code=featured And this is the Summit Racing thing... http://static.summitracing.com/globa...o-340011_w.jpg http://www.summitracing.com/parts/VDO-340011/?rtype=10 It would work for guys like me with Supers cause my speedo cable is two pieces with a box in the middle that does who knows what. I think it was for a mileage reminder light that never worked. So I could easily replace it with this. People without this weird box would have to find a couple to connect the two. |
Looks like Pacific Customs does not want us to look at their products, or buy them!

Wow did you see thats guys blacked out fuchs

If anyone started offering complete kits for these things... .I whish!
What can one do on a standard to have a speedo-input? |

Hi
VDO make a sender that connects to a speedo cable, it will operate a digital speedo. I have a Spa combined tacho and speedo for one of my 1303s. The other 1303 I've fitted a Spa speedo, I fitted this speedo because with a smaller steering t wheel I couldn't the top of the speedo. Both these speedos use a hall affect sensor on the front wheel Steve |
