Biggest brakes I've heard of
 
I was reading online, and I found a brake set from Alcon, in Britian, that is just scary big. Imagine if you will; 400mm front rotors clamped by 12(!!!!) piston calipers, and 380mm rear rotors clamped by 6 piston calipers. The cost for all of this? A mere $16 000 USD. Unfortunately, I haven't found any pictures of the set installed; although, I am still looking. Incidentally, I think it mentioned a minimum of 19 inch wheels.

And yet, apparently, people are putting these on their cars. What's next, clipping the 5 disc carbon carbon brake assembly from a 737 landing gear? Incidentally, my friend works at Goodrich aerospace on the landing gear production line, so he was showing me one, and I thin kthat with some creative engineering, someone could make the multidisc brake system work with probably about 17x8 inch wheels...

maybe behind the 20" wheels that are all the rage on trucks and suv's. maybe with a set of those a hummer can stop on a dime :D

No, hummers will never be able to stop on a dime, not even with those. the 747 air busses are lighter than an H1...

Naah, Hummers are heavy, but not THAT heavy...

A Boeing 747 weighs between 339,000 and 870,000 lbs.

An H1 is about 7900 lbs...

A friend of mine is a design engineer at Goodrich Landing Gear Systems, and he took me out on the production floor one night after hours. The brake systems are really compact, I am positive that they could fit under a 17 or 18 inch wheel, it might need to be deeper than 7 inches though. This stems from the fact that many 737-200 airplanes use a 14 and 15inch wheels. Granted many other use 19 and 21inch wheels.
