412 GL Wagon Project
 

Kris brought me a new project for Christmas - a '73 412 wagon. It's a solid car, but doesn't run. It came from the original owner in Auburn, Ca with 131K miles on original everything.

Plan is to make it a daily driver:
* Rebuild suspension while lowering in front
* Rebuild brakes, fuel system, steering, a/c, heater, auto trans
* Build up 2056 T4 with fuel injection
* 15" Fuchs, dechromed body, color matched bumpers, etc.

Kuhl 2 door Wally. I may be in Holland/Belgium again in Feb. I'll look you up again. I'd love to figure out how to put Porsche disks on a 412. Ideas?

Supa, know any locals with 944 or 911 brakes to loan me for test fits?

All my stuff is down south. I do have a friend up here with the brakes from a '84 944, but he is USMC boot camp I'll have to go and knock on his parents door. Hey while i'm in town for the next week, if you want I could show you some twisty roads.

Rear is easy if you want to retain the drums: its a thick center hub, which can easily be redrilled (all of the bolt location part is equally thick :D )
Front is more work (haven't done that either btw) or you locate a set of specially made 5x130 early model 914 disks from some/one at 914club.com, which sold these a while back. Not cheap tho, but a bolt-on solution...

Its not all that easy like on a type 3 tho :rolleyes:

I was looking at those studded 914 rotors too. Definately a nice option for the front.

Are the T4 rear bearings bigger than type 1? Can you imagine retro-fitting a T1 stub axle for the T4? Or would you consider modifying the T4 axle?

Just look at that last picture of the 914 rear caliper: That stock mechanical handbrake lever is very cool.
Unfortunately the disk and caliper are not very large...but may be enough to convince our inspectors that the brakes are 'upgraded' to disks with mechanical handbrake :rolleyes:
