Resources for GL work in GTA

Hiya,

We should start a list of resources in the GTA for aircooled performance. What I'm suggesting is if you got any engine work done, where did you get it done ? How about redrilling your drums .. where did you get it done ?

Basically a list of shops where you got some work done that could be of value to other members of the club.

I will include this list on our club website. I'll have details of the site when we meet at Kars and Trucks on Mar 22nd.

So lets start here:

I got my 944 rear ebrake/hubs from WhaleTailCanada, in Kitchner. They were used and after I cleaned them up, worked fine.

I got my 993 Cup 2 replicas (FVD) (18x8.5, 18x10) from Tiremag in Thornhill.

->This is where i got my engine balanced. VERY good friend of mine. He also does a few stupid fast full blown V8's. Highly recomend Ang. Motor runs very smooth at idle (even with the 86c) and like silk at any RPM. Motor is SOLID mounted! i love it. PM me and i'll give you his cell#. Tell him Orange bug Pete (as many don't know my last name/he does) sent you.

Canadian Balancing
Scarborough
Angelo

The Kars and Trucks boys were sceptical about him. Gave him a small job and it turned out awesome. Now they use him for everything, including Steve's 3Rotor monster that will compete at the World Street Race.

-> Fiberglass
Good friend works out of his garage, known for his "flexable fiberglass". He does stuff like scoops, skirts for the ricer crowd. Give him a idea, or some sort of mold, and he can make it. Fits cars well as his fiberglass "flexes" not leaving voids from fiber being too stiff. PM me for cell #.
ohh...he's got a mold for a "W" decklid. Kars and trucks have it (stiff fiber), on their front engine bug. He (Dan) did some tweaking/modding my 911 shroud, to fit my Intakes/Superflo's. Etobicoke/Toronto.

-> Lanner at VDubCustoms for my 4x100 studding, while steering me towards fitting the 17's. Mississauga.

-> Metal Supermarket in Etobicoke on Norseman, East of Kipling
for all your raw metal needs. He's a VDub enthousiast with a blue standard bug. Where I/Kars N Truck get our metal.

-> Really good welder in a unit right behind the ^^Metal Supermarket. He's awesome with Aluminum. He put some extra fittings on my drysump tank.

-> Canadian Crank and Chrome (sp? i'll have to check)
for any "touchups/cleaning/polishing" cranks. East of the 400 and north of 401. Right beside the 400. Cleaned up some surface rust for me on a couple journals.

-> Quality Precision Crank
these guys will get down to the nitty gritty, to size/source, custom/proper bearings. i wouldn't use them for crank needs (couple stories). Use who's mentioned above^^. Etobicoke on Advance, East of Kipling.

-> Motex
for head work rebuilding. his reputation was great and out there. then the big racecar guys got ahold of him throwing cash. his workmanship is going downhill due to his developing big ego. beware. in Etobicoke.

-> Agostino Racing
V8 racecar guys. used them to "cut" my head to accept the K-800's. Pickering.

-> ME
for Parker hoses, fittings. Parker warehouse right around the corner from work. i get great prices.

-> Amsoil lubricants
Me. i'm a dealer. got the dealer thing for myself and friends. so if you want anything, my dealer cost to you ;) . i use their oil for the extended drain intervals. i'm lazy to change oil, as i drive alot. usually run 13-15K between changes. i just change the filter and "top up" at 6kish. sometimes don't.

375K on my '96 A4. motor runs like new, not burning anything, with same power.
490K on '89 74016V. still runs great.

'01 TDI as this motor is very picky on which oil to use. Amsoil has a oil, which is part of a small list. 100% synthetic, for Diesel use, CH-4 and VW 505 rated.

might try the 20W50 severe service in my bug. have been running Rotella T 10W40 mineral oil. thinking of going synthetic with turbo.

my questions are:
Sandeep, your "colour match paint" guy? (split crotch coolers)
where to source turbo "stuff" like wastegates, BOV's, and intercoolers?

This is off the top of my head. I could drive around when i'm bored, and get phone#'s/addresses. But, I should be finishing the split.

ohh.... there is this guy in Oakville........well that was a one time deal.... :D

Sandeep February 3rd 2005 22:24

Pete,

Thats quite a list ! Good to know.

My paint guy ...jees I don't even remember his name :eek: I will find out and edit this section. He has a blue '57 Split that he has restored so he knows bugs.

Lets not forget Marks Aircooled in Port Hope ... I'd like to get together before May and go see his 2.6L T4 .. he is also the only Canadian distributor for Aircooled Technology's parts.

Turbo parts hmmm .. I will try and find something. I've finally decided on a 1971cc T4 EFI turbo/crank fire ignition setup with Megasquirt as my engine for the short term so this will be interesting.

More to come.

Turbo will be from Ebay most likely and will stay with 5-8 psi with my stock 2.0 T4.

Will run this setup for a year to get used to it and then beef up the parts, but keep displacement about the same and run more boost :D

I'm interested in getting this guys info. Would like to chat to him to see if he could build a rad shroud for me, and how much it would cost.

Thanks,

Just got my heads back, and everything looks "A" OK :agree:

I was listening to a someone that tried to screw him with some Porsche heads, that how i got the bad review.

Motex had originally freshened up the heads when they were pulled from the race car , and into my super in 2001. He was happy to see them again and treated me very well, with a turnaround time of 2 weeks, at a great price!

-welding
-machined
-lap the valves
-2 exhaust guides

petevw June 9th 2005 11:59

Well, since i'm waiting for some parts from AC.net, and the work done mentioned above^^, i figured i'd get the heads flowed! :agree:

Took them to a shop that specializes in V8's. They have a Superflow 1200, bench/computer setup. Great service, 2nd day turnaround, fair price. Highly recommend!

Greetings,

Sandeep thought it might be helpful for me to introduce myself to your group. My name is Scott Lyons and I run germansupply.com. We are an online and "bricks & mortar" VW aircooled specialist located in downtown Toronto. Since we specialize in bay window buses, we have lots of type 4 engine parts in stock. Also type 1 engine bits as well. We do engine building in house. I personally do all the engine assembly on every engine we build. We have a service facility also where I repair and restore only air-cooled VW's.

Sandeep is rebuilding or at least refreshing his engine and I was able to supply him with some quality engine internals. If anyone needs parts, please send me an email or call the telephone number on our contact page.

gonebuggy April 9th 2008 19:24

Me: for all of you custom, machining needs. Prototyping and small production work. I can open up your cylinder heads/flycut, open up the bores in cases. My rates are about HALF of what you'd expect elsewhere.....

Drop me a line!

Thanks for the kind words Pete!:D

Try these guys for Powdercoating:

I got all my engine tin done by them a few years ago, very good product with fast turn around and good rates.

Alex

alex has done some machining for us also. fair price and fast turnaround.

as for brimac anodizing, i used to manufacture furniture, this is going back into the late 80's, and we used brimac then. their work was perfect, and it's good to see they're still in business.

petevw November 6th 2009 19:08

Need to strip these crotch cooler flaps.

Have you guys used any media blasters around here? Wouldn't sandblasting pit the crap out of them?

Hi,
Although I've officially retired from the resto/engine biz I will still keep my hand in things though.
I can rebuild porsche 901 transmissions for a good price. With parts 3 day turn around. Two cores usually makes one transmission at low cost.
I've built 3 for myself, (technically I have a 914 rebuilt 901 sideshifter in stock) and I'm turning a 911-901 4 speed into a 5 speed right now.
If there's enought interest I'll build some VW trannies for the faithfull, maybe keep a couple in stock.
Any interest?

My work is top notch, I've been doing a lot of 911 stuff lately.
