The Pinkback ('72 Squareback)

Hi guys,

Let me introduce my newest aircooled car to the members of this board where I used to spent so much time and gathered a lot of information & inspirations from. Of course there are other platforms nowadays but still I like this forum the most as people here can appreciate other's efforts the most. (having said that my instagram account is sleepair_vw - if somebody would like to follow)

Long story short: this is my 3rd aircooled I own, started with a yellow standard I have totally rebuilt, followed by the red 1302 built from scratch, and now I'm driving this late model squareback from 1972.

Time is flying, I became a dad in 2020 that forced me to sell the 1302 and buy something more family friendly. I'm not a Transporter-guy at all and always had a thing with estates, so I focused on 411/412s & Type 3 Variants. I realized also I was not going to have any spare time for a project car so the aim was finding something I can drive and live with as is. Took me good 2 years to find an interesting car, and when I say interesting I mean the general shape, the extras and, well, the color too...:p On the other hand there are a bunch of cool parts in it I will share later on. I already did some minor updates and have some plans for the future as well but most of it is just aestethics, nothing fancy. It's not going to be a hardcore germanlooker but still something different from the slammed type3s out there with joy of driving and performance in the focus.
By now also the color is getting to grow on me :)

I bought her in Germany by the end of 2021 when I was visiting the fantastic Arimighty show in the Netherlands but due to administrative tasks it was delivered only in March 2022.

This is how she looked like when I bought it:

So the good parts that sold me the car:

- It is the very last series of Type3s, with the "2 vents in the middle" dash which I kinda like, I was looking for a car like that. Long nose means more front trunk and IRS rear suspension by default.

- Full solid body, has been rebuilt by the previous owner in 2000 and still holds up very well, lines are straight, literally no rust, even the cromes are in great shape and all of them are made in Germany.

- Everything works as it should, it is a daily driver not a project car

- All the modifications listed below are in the papers which is the holy grail for somebody having dumb laws like us which allows ZERO modifications. May sound unbelivible to some of you here but the only way to drive modified cars in my country is to buy something with valid papers in an other member country of the European Union as they have to accept the papers based on EU directives  Otherwise nothing is allowed to modify even if it is a part with TUV you will see hard times. Now this car came with fresh German TUV so finally I can drive a modded aircooled with no stress. Hence the delivery took so long.

(Mods to be listed with photos soon)

a very tidy wagon, I like the boxter wheels, are they 6's or 7's?
the seats look comfortable too.

Thanks! The wheels are 6 in front and 7 in the back using 20/15mm spacers which is possible only due to the slightly rolled fenders. Seats are from a Golf/Rabbit GTI MK1, said to be Recaros (OEM).

The ones above and other goodies:

2.0L Type 4 engine with external oil cooler built by GWD (he is one of the bests in Europe). Literally stock with new Solex 40 PDSIT carbs and maybe a cam (seller can't remember exactly). Not rev happy but a great cruiser with quiet stock muffler and heating cores in place. Run 50.000 kms so far.

Sorry for the huge images, I don't know if it's possible to decrease the size as they are linked here from an other site.

Extremely cool car, great buy as one in this condition is very hard to find. With those mods in the papers even rarer.
The colour, well,, 'ist Geschmacksache' lets say ;-)

Thanks Walter, these are indeed getting rare today. Well... let me know if you need the color code :p

After long dormency and delivery it was time to was her to see what's under the dust. Not bad for a 22 year-old paint (judge the condition not the color )

What's better than a type4 engine? Two of them!

My ex-type4 engine delivered to the new owner. 400km trip, zero issues, decent heating. (The orange 911 is a genuine RUF test car with full history and 300.000 kms on the clock, hence the engine rebuild. What a car...)

I like the dimensions of the Boxster wheels but the design is not my cup of tea. I borrowed a set of D90s to give it a go.
