'56 rag with a twist

After lurking here for a while, time to post some pica's of my project.
I am not sure what it is exactly, is it german, resto, callook or race? you tell me:confused:

It all started in December 2007, after I sold my T2a single cab with 190Bhp G60 engine I bought this Oval. The plan was to use it as a daily and give it some TLC in de weekends.
This is how I bought it, original.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/62694.jpg
Planted a new gearbox and 2ltr type4 engine.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/68858.jpg
Narrowed, adjustable beem with dropped spindels.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/69513.jpg
And this is how I drove it (first time out was EBI II)
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/69518.jpg

To make a long story short, it's a total resto now. The plan is to have the resto-cal ish look on the outside, with an inside, chassis and suspension that is ready for some strip and circuit aktion.

Let's start with the wheels;
I have two sets, fuch's and MAG industries, both with Porsche bolt patern.
One set for street use and one set for circuit/strip abuse.

Rear Suspension;
18cm narrowed to have the same width as an original oval.
IRS with 944 arms and brakes.

Now I am working on the body.
Most of the rust on the right side is gone.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/94297.jpg
The complete doorpillar is gone.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/95059.jpg
And replaced.

http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/96113.jpg

And today I was working on the 1/4 panel.

fahrvergnugen October 1st 2010 15:50

Almost ready, after using some lead filler it looks like new again 8)

fahrvergnugen October 1st 2010 15:55

For an oval they even don't sell the bad fitting repro sheet metal. The only thing I could do is restore the old metal.
Together with some Tikimadness leftovers  (drag race oval) I will try to fix it again.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/96983.jpg
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/96984.jpg

With these 2 holes the body is mounted to the torsion tube. My torsion tube is about 9cm narrowed (each side) so these holes needs to be moved.

Here's the difference;

fahrvergnugen October 1st 2010 15:58

The original form was long gone, so I had downloaded some pictures and started moddeling metal.

It's a corner you can't see when the car is ready, but I like it to look original.

fahrvergnugen October 1st 2010 15:59

Finally finished the left corner. When the body is back on the channels I will cut the corners at the wright lenght.

http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/98102.jpg

Nice fit, only have to grind the welds down and use some lead to smooth things.

On to the right site.

daaamn! nice project! I always said the Netherland and especially Keversite.nl has the most GL projects going on. Too bad of the language barrier, so thanks for posting here, in english! I often read through the Keversite forums with the help of google translate :P

volkdent October 1st 2010 20:17

Oh man, you are up to your eyeballs with that project!!! Great work, can't wait to follow the progress.

You and Ricola need to get together and have a beer discussing how many Km of welding wire you used on your projects!!!

Jason

looks great loving the front suspension :)

cheers andy

ricola October 2nd 2010 04:37

Good to see you have made progress since I last looked at your main thread! One thing I'm not sure about is the inner bit of your spherical bearing mount. It looks like you have a rigid outer (hole in steel plate) and a urethane surrounded inner mount, this will lead to movement and potential fatigue in the bolt. I think if you just made the inner part rigid it would be good (much better than a lot of other kits that use loose outer plates...
Rich

Wally October 2nd 2010 06:28

Great to see your project here in summerised form Paul!
This made me appreciate your work even more as it made more sense to me now. Its otherwise easy to get lost in endless details....:o
I also don't wanna know how many grinding disks you've used haha!

fahrvergnugen October 2nd 2010 09:01

After 3 week doing nothing on the car, I finally started again.

The left crosmember is ready, so it is time to start on the right side.
This is where I started with.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/98621.jpg
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/98622.jpg

And the result after hammering, grinding, bending, cutting and welding a few hours.

Almost there 8)

Hi Rich, I love reading about your build. You do awsome work.
You saw that right about the inner mount, my first version (like manny sets out there) where bolted only on the outside of the steel plate. This new version has a 12.9 bolt with a precision hole in the steel plate and uniball, the urethane is extra and not really needed (I think/hope)

Cheers, Paul.

Hi Wally, yeah I followd you to this place.

I have the same feeling about loosing it in the details:) and have to look tru all my pictures from now and then to see what I have done.
I have used a few grinding disks and like volksdent sayed; welding wire, and I only just started. Still have a lot of plans and tricks up my sleeve;)

Finally the crosmember is done, When the body is on it's place i will modify the endpieces of the crosmember and probably do the bumb over again.

http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/98847.jpg

The heaterchannel was to long on the front and to short on the rear, I did not want to redrill my floor so I had to dismantle the channel.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/98849.jpg
The bottom of the channel will be mounted on the floor and then make the top fit.

Looks nice on the inside
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/98848.jpg

Now that I opened the channel, I bare metaled the bottom and I will put some decent paint on it
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/98850.jpg

Paul.

fahrvergnugen October 16th 2010 15:24

After I painted the inside and bottom of the channel, I sprayed antirust on it and some inox spray on the welding areas. Now it was time to fit it in it's new position..
I placed the channel 1/2 an inch backwards on the bottomplate.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/99223.jpg

Back fits like a glove now.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/99193.jpg

The firewall can be mounted without a problem

Thanks, I realy love doing it;)

fahrvergnugen October 27th 2010 15:43

Finally the channel is ready, but after welding and grinding it was torn a lot >:(
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/99461.jpg

So I fixated the channel and fired up the torch, after it was heated I tried to torn it back.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/99464.jpg

And that worked.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/99467.jpg

Next step is the firewall, I decided to use and repair the leftovers Tikimadness donated.

Today I cleaned up the firewall that was cut out of a '54. The firewall or innerwings where replaced or repaired in the past, it was not spotwelded but had a lot of welds around the edges. But it came out pretty nice.

http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/99542.jpg
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/99543.jpg

This firewall was cut out because of it's weight, but the heaterchannels had to stay. this is why I had to repair the corners, it was not rusted but cut around the heaterchannels.

After some grinding, bending, drilling and a lot of hammering, the left channel fits properly.

Hi

Your doing excellent work, I'm taking the body off a 1303 soon so it can be painted, I'm glad that we don't have the same problems down here as you do there.

I might be seeing things but in the photo http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/99903.jpg it looks like there is some sort bulge on the chassis floor at the rear end behind the seat rails, is this for something special or is it a piece of your bug puzzle waiting to be fitted?

Thanks Steve,

The bulge is made to fit the oilcooler, I think this will have plenty of airflow. Good luck with your car.

Nice work Paul! I donīt think I have ever seen anyone make such a big modification for an oil cooler! I like it!

Found some time to work on the car again 8)

The underside of the left doorpillar was bad, of course >:(
time for a Hoekie of Hooky :)
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/101713.jpg
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/101714.jpg

First I had to shorten it, this way the bracing could stay in it's place.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/101715.jpg

fitting
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/101716.jpg

It only needs some welding. 8)
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/101719.jpg

Paul.

fahrvergnugen January 15th 2011 15:37

This morning it was time to finish the doorpillar.

Welded the hooky piece.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/101822.jpg

Normally you can not reach the inside, mine is still open and it is double sheetmetal so I also welded the inside.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/101823.jpg

Then I dismantled the door (this is very heavy with all the parts and glass in it) and checked the gap, I must say ; I am very pleased with it.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/101824.jpg
