why don't people use the 091 wwwwwhen irsing splitties?
2 litre box, shifter at the top -100mm flanges?
takes the 228mm clutch -I don't understand why not? |
The drag racing guy's use them, but with universal joints inboard instead of CVs. Ron Lummus racing has the kit. The bus box shift shaft exits higher than the typeI tranny. To use it "as is" in a bug, you have to run the shift rod on top of the tunnel. Gene Berg makes a intermediate housing that allows you to use the type I nose cone and hockey stick to keep the shift rod in the stock location. The price to adapt a bus box to a bug compared to other swaps (901,914,915 etc...) is about the same, and you get an extra gear with the others. So you have closer 1st thru 4th then tall 5th for highway cruising. This a basic answer to this subject.

I think by "splitties", he's referring to old buses.
My answer is, mine was already done with T1 IRS when I got it. Most probably do it because they don't plan on running much more than a mild T1 engine. Jeff- |
The ring and pinion is too tall in the bus boxes. It's almost like keeping the reduction boxes in the splitties. You'll be able to launch the car fron stop light to stop light, but the highway would be a noisy occasion.

... not to mention the cost. They are few and far between around here. I been looking for a core to do some mock-up and am prolly gonna have to buy a whole junk bus just to get an 091 core.
Lets see...whole bay bus for tranny, whole 951 for brakes and rear susp. Quite a junk yard going. Jeff- |
Yeah the 091 trannys are popular with the offroad/dune buggy crowd. Depending on the model (3/5/6 rib) they're worth about $US300-500/pc in 'as-is' condition. You can get a Porsche-5 for that kind of coin.

I just gave a 6 rib bus tranny away for FREE  to a baja buggy dude :( All I wanted out of the bus was the 2.0 core.

Panel, I might be able to find you a mock-up late bus tranny, if you can't find one. I got a "freebee" 091 last year just to get the bell housing off it to make a break-in stand with:D . I know there are some more around here. I need to make one call to find out.

There's only a couple of guys local that even fool with them. Already checked, they are hoarding what complete trannies they've got.
My only local source would be to buy a whole bus just for a junk tranny to do mockup. Keep me posted if you stumble on another cheapie. Thanks, Jeff- |
Will PM you the next day or so with what i find.
