A few things

Hey all,

Well bad news, my motor has to come apart:angry:
Basically what happened was i started hearing a weird noise coming from the clutch area. After pulling the motor to investigate, turns out the pilot bearing is effed. But that's not all i found! I take the gland nut out, only to find my flywheel really loose on the dowels....

So i pull it off, and the dowels fall out of the crank! I look at the dowels and they have been peened all over their circumference. (It's a dirty trick to make the dowel a few thou bigger to make them a nice press fit in the hole) The rest of the crank is beauty, real nice piece. But because of some lazy goon, who reamed the crank a thou or to over, they had to make the dowels a little bigger to fit!

Now the dowel holes are all ovaled, and i'll need to put in a new crank!

Not a happy camper....

On a related note, does someone have a decent stock peashooter exhaust? (stocker is going back in!)

That sucks big time! Where did you get that crank? Flywheel? Who assembled?

BTW buy the same exhaust as i did for my stocker. Call Greg.

The car was running PERFECT too. Everything was sorted out (so I thought ;))

Pat and I assembled it.

I'll give Greg a ring,

I'm assuming you 2 didn't centerpunch the dowels. The dowels were in the crank when recieved?

Ouch..... seeing those prices hurts. I paid a small fortune for my crank and flywheel. Well over 1K. Never mind the drive to Fisher Buggies in Florida, to pick it up! :D

What'cha doing for a replacement?

Pete,

I'm about 8 months away from being a licensed machinist;) We didn't peen the dowels. They came like that, installed from the factory.

Not too sure yet on what I'll replace it with. Something bigger probably. Maybe a flanged unit

That Hurts

Sorry to hear about your Crank Alex, I feel your pain you have worked so hard on your motor. Well this is a good time to plan to go bigger, if it's going to be more efficient and the same money. I wish I could help but ya know I am limited in that area.

Good Luck:rolleyes:

Hey! Can you please explain what you mean by centerpunched? A pic will be nice too ;) You know what they say about pics eh? :D

Thanks!

Wlex, sorry to hear about your misfortune. That sucks.

Cheers!

Sorry bro, the peening trick is dirty, very dirty. Can't you bump up to a 11/32 dowel and save the crank/flywheel?

I will save the crank one way or another, but am also toying with the idea of bumping the stroke up to 82mm :) I mean the crank has to come out anyways.... same old story lol Plus I may have a lead on some cheap IDAs...

Yeah, it's a sickness. I'm in the same boat, I bought all the parts for a 1956cc and now am having reoccuring nightmares of 94's, 82's and other random thoughts. The IDA's sound interesting, are 2 sets available? :D Nothing beats the IDA bark when the foot gets heavy....

Alex,

I have the exhaust at my place now. It is a stock Brazil exhaust with no chrome pea shooters. I bought it off someone else here and I believe it has never been used. Hows $40. You can email me for more info and I am around all day Sunday.

Hate to say it but The cheap china cranks never have passed the sniff test with me. I seen major flex with them and I still have a couple of cracked ones kicking around here.

Crank and flywheel must be 8 doweled together then reamed for the proper press fit. If they are not then you're just pissing up a tree in a headwind.
