Rust repairs (upgrades)

I got some time to work on my own project (finally) Just some basic rust repair panels, but it's still some progress. :D They are not welded in place yet.

And today I finished the basic install of the new rear apron that uses zdus fastners to remove apron for drive train work. I still have some metal work to do to get the fit tighter with the body (damn brazilian made parts)

Good to see you got a chance to get back on your project. Love the way you mounted the rear apron.

Kafer_Mike September 14th 2009 22:07

Nice touch with the removable rear apron and Dzus fasteners. Wish I would have done it... ;)

Lazarus September 14th 2009 23:00

Already got the mexi seals Tony. You told me about them over on STF years ago, before I joined this site, and the VKG. ;)

Well, my progress with this project is slow so I still remember the stuff I bought already. But, I do suffer from C.R.S. quite often.:lmao::lmao:

wrenchnride247 September 20th 2009 21:32

More progress this weekend!!! Got the body off the pan!! :woohoo:

wrenchnride247 September 20th 2009 21:37

So now the body is back on the rotisserie!! Time to get some rust repairs done, and they are not as bad as I thought!

Today I got the pan mounted on my engine stands/rotisserie. Can you notice I don't like working on the ground with my projects if possible?:D

johnnyvee September 21st 2009 22:16

that's a nice setup for working on the pan

wrenchnride247 September 21st 2009 23:13

Thanks man. I got them on sale a few years ago from northern tool at $30 bucks each! This saved some time making something just for the pan. I'm planning to get this GL done sometime early next year.

NO_H2O September 22nd 2009 08:03

Great idea for the pan. Save the knees and back.

wrenchnride247 September 28th 2009 22:29

Wow, this is the longest period in time I have been able to work on my project (in the same year!). Some more was done today. Had some small areas of rust on the mounting lip, but took care of it already. The new pans needed some stuff removed (seat rails, battery mount, and rear bracing) Had to remove the jack point to get the rear brace off (hidden spot welds), and will weld it back on later. Ran out of time to prep the drivers side pan though. But, there is still progress being made!!

Knock it out man. How did those pans fit?

They fit good. There was some rust issues under every piece I cut off, but no big deal. I think you told me the guy you got them from had them outside at one time. The pan will be blasted anyway. Thanks for hooking me up with them though :goodjob:

We have a four day shutdown coming up at work starting wednesday evening so, no progress will be made till after start-up. :(

Plus, I have some orders to fill for some clients. (thats more $$$ for my project, and I don't mind that) :D

wrenchnride247 October 18th 2009 21:05

Well, since I couldn't go to eurofest because of some work that came in unexpectedly  I did make some time today to make a new monting plate for the 915 shifter, and TIG weld it in...

wrenchnride247 October 24th 2009 21:54

Got some more done today. I now have plenty of clearance for the CV's! Also, seam welded the frame horns up.

Lovely welding, but I hope you are putting some strength in elsewhere as those framehorns have been severely weakened...

I have thought of that Ricola...ran out of time to do that part (quit rushing me! :) )

The steel I used to "fill in" the part I cut out is 1/4" thick and is fully welded, but will add some material under the frame horns just in case.

Panelfantastic October 26th 2009 09:43

I didn't realize the CVs on the 915 conversion were that much of a clearance issue?
Pretty easy to beef that area back up though. Work is looking awesome!

When it's done I will wait till you come home after mids, and do a burnout in your drive way just when your falling asleep....:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Glad you finally joined the GL forums Dude!!

wrenchnride247 November 1st 2009 20:30

I got the gussets almost complete. Just need to cap of the ends. This is 1/8th inch plate formed to the frame horns. (I hope Ricola is happy now :p )

They are now complete!

Well, at some point in this cars life the gasket on the bulk head inspection cover plate must have started leaking because, I found some rust inside it! Also found three strange factory holes on the passenger side frame head (see pic) there are none on the drivers side . These holes didn't help keep water out either. I brushed all the loose rust out and cleaned it out best I could. Had to cut some access points out on the "napoleon hat" to get in there too. The metal is still plenty thick enough though. So, I got out some trusty POR-15 and made some "extended reach" paint brushes, and coated all the rust (the rest of the inside tunnel looks brand new!) It's not the prettiest finish, but it sealed the rust.

Well, its been a year since I posted (and worked) on my rust repairs. So hears what I've done last nite and today.

Lots of work to get this to fit good.

Now the other part is getting this aftermarket panel to fit. None of it matched up to original one, but I'm getting close! Still a few more hours of fitting before welding it in.

Yes, you do. We can move this one over though if you'd like.
