Hydraulic Lifters question?
Hello!!
I was wondering if there is any necessary machining that needs to be done to a stock type one case to install Hydraulic lifters? If so could you please tell me! Thanks for the info!! Clint |
Yes, from what I understand.
The hydro lifters are wider so the lifter bores need machined out and then the hydros slide right in. Check RIMCO as I know they can do this service. Good Luck, |
So there isnt any aftermarket type 1 hydraulic lifters out there that wouldn't need machining?

The Mexican T1 motors I think have hydro lifters so maybe check with the importers as they sell parts as well. But the company name is blanking on me at the moment.
Then again it could be the hydro valves from the T4 and the wasserboxer..? |
Hello-
There aren't any mushroom-style hydraulic lifters around. In Mexico, they use the cylindrical T4-esque hydraulic lifters in cases with larger lifter bores (24mm nominal diameter), and correspondingly more casting material around the lifter bores. I am a fan of hydraulic lifters for what they are (i.e. not lightweight, not good above ~6500-7000rpm, but great for maintenance reduction and greater lifespan of parts). However, installing hydraulic lifters into an older T1 case can cause a problem... the material around the lifter bores becomes very thin very fast. Many (all???) new cases have more material around these sections, as the same casting that's used for production hydraulic engines is used for our solid lifter replacement cases. If you have one of these, then hydros are groovy. If not, then I'd either pass or get a different case. Take care, |
Good info Shad!

Yes thanks Shad!!! I really like it when I get a really informative response from a forum member!!! Thats good to know that they dont work well over 7000 rpm. I am trying to build a high reving motor and all the info on anything is helping. This info on the Hydraulic lifters is gould though for my dads 71 bus. It will be nice to tell him that there is an alternative to adjusting your valves every so on and so on!!!
Thanks form the Nordic Empress!! Clint |
