Oh no ... car-B-que

A bit of crappy news ... coming back from the Waterdown car show / swap meet this afternoon, I had a bit of a car-B-que in the 67 I just got. Looks like the fuel line tube that is supposed to be pressed in to the carb casting came loose. Car died out, I pulled in to a driveway, and a person in a car that was passing by was yelling that I had flames back there as I was getting out to take a look. I should have had an extinguisher with me, but didn't. Luckily some people driving by stopped, and had a jug of water that was enough to douse the flames. The sweatshirt I tried to use didn't do too much.

So the paint is burned off the engine lid and vent panel above that, and blistered on the quarter panel a bit. Underhood I think it was mostly the tarboard insulation on the firewall that burned, the wiring and hoses on the one side where it was flaming up don't look too bad.

I'll have to call the insurance company tomorrow, hopefully it's not too much if a hassle, since I just called them on Friday to get the coverage on the car. It is a classic car policy with Lant, and I've been with them for about 10 years with no claims. Then I just have to figure out who to get to do the repair work once the insurance gives the OK. The paint work isn't a big deal, there are a few shops in town that we deal with who will do good work, I just don't know about the mechanical and wiring stuff ... nobody really close by for that. Any recommendations for a good shop that is closest to Caledon? Anyone know about that shop in Glen Williams that works on VDubs? For now I had CAA tow the car up to the dealership. Guess I will be making some phone calls tomorrow. Kind of a bummer way to end a good weekend.

DUDE S***TY DEAL...
sorry to hear about that
hope all goes well man

NO_H2O May 24th 2009 18:38

I hate to hear that. Those fittings can come out way to easy. Sounds like it can be saved. That is always a plus.

TunedPerfection May 24th 2009 21:33

Ed, Steve had said he was close to having a car b que in that car, I guess you were the lucky guy who actually did! His fuel filter had split and he caught that before it got ugly, but what you had happen often goes un-noticed until it's too late. Too bad you did not give me a shout when you were at the show, I live 1 block away. I was there this morning with my daughters for a couple of hours.
Anyway, the place in Glen Williams is a good shop- Arno's is the name. Dave is the son, he does the water-cooleds, and his dad (can't think of the name) does the air cooleds. Sorry to hear of your luck. Lant was good to me when the '59 was totalled after 5 days of insurance on it, so hopefully you do okay too. Maybe you'll even come out ahead and can buy some rims.....:lmao:

petevw May 25th 2009 00:52

That sucks Ed. Good to hear you are alright.

If the damage isn't too bad, you can wire it up yourself.
http://www.cip1.ca/SearchResults.asp?Cat=1639

My super has gone through 2 engine fires since '82. I remember them as a kid.
-One time was while we were driving(probably same issue as you).
-The other time, my mom couldn't get the bug started. When my dad got home from work, he poured some gas down the carb(done it before), and tried to start it. Looked in the rear view mirror and saw flames. Took awhile to find a neighbours garden hose as the bug was parked on the street away from the house(no driveway, downtown).

Took the fire extinguisher out of my super when the 2332 blew up. After reading this, i'm getting it back it in the bug tommorrow.

No biggie, get it together for SpringFling! :D

Sorry to hear that. I hope everything to be re-done again!!!

big daddy May 25th 2009 07:10

Good to hear you are alright, at least it happened after you enjyoy the weekend. That sounds like an easy fix but it still sucks Ed. Now get it fixed so we can see you at some shows.

Goodluck

big daddy May 25th 2009 07:17

Good to hear you are alright and you did enjoy the weekend before your accident. This sounds like aa easy fix so lets get it done, hope to see you at some shows.

It is quite easy to fix those lines for good. I usually give them a good yank when servicing it will come out if at all loose. I then sand it slightli and tin it with ordinary solder. I shake it while hot to live the thinnest smear of solder. I tap it back in and have never had one of those come out

Thanks for the encouragement everyone, I'll be giving Lant a call this morning to see how they want to handle this.

Greg, I didn't have your number programmed in to my phone, otherwise I certainly would have given you a call while I was down there.

If you have the room to install a system, these are nice and give you some peace of mind.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/b...1.jpg~original
We put one of these systems in the Herbie X. I will have one in my car but haven't had much time to get it done. I put a hand held fire extinguisher in all my vehicles and every one that leaves our shop. You just never know when you will need one. I think the system cost @ $350.

CLKWRK May 25th 2009 15:55

Hey Ed,
engine wiring is super easy to fix, you should try doing it yourself

Alex May 25th 2009 16:40

Dave,

I will talk to you about a setup once I get to point of installing my engine. ;-)

Maybe in another year....hopefully

Alex

CLKWRK May 25th 2009 16:50

Ed I don't know if your car had this going on, but here goes ...

Public service announcement time:
Never put a filter on the pressure side of the fuel pump, avoid putting it in the engine bay at all.
Under the fuel tank or above the transaxle are ok.
- cheap filters can crack or even burst under pressure especially if the engine is running hot, the engine bay area will get warm
- filters can get heavy (filled with fuel) and wiggle the fitting on the carb loose

... fuel filter rant over

fast Ed May 25th 2009 17:53

Yes, I have seen that mentioned Bryan, I guess I should have dealt with it right away. Too anxious to get out cruising in the new toy.

Insurance appraiser is coming by Tuesday afternoon, we'll take it from there.

Ed,

Dang, really sorry to hear about this!:(

Wiring the engine compartment is fairly straight forward. Depending on what sort of auxillary junk and accessories are wired in, there should really be under 10 main wires to contend with.

I've had mixed experiences with Arno's personally (last was about 4 years ago). Remember, nobody cares more about your car than you do.

Alex

CLKWRK May 25th 2009 22:01

Hey Ed post a pic of the carnage, depending how severe it is you might be able to get it back on the road fast

Agreed! I may have Friday off if you need a hand, I love mad rushes! This thing will be crusin' Sunday! Depending on the extent of the damage I may be able to spare a few lengths of original wiring from my special parts stash;)

Alex

petevw May 26th 2009 01:04

JB Weld that nipple back into the carb, and get her going! Let's see it at SpringFling.

Tell the Insurance adjuster there is an independant shop in town called "Boxer AutoGruppe", and they can fix it for beer! :lmao:

Pete

fast Ed May 26th 2009 09:30

I'd give it a go myself, knowing that there aren't a ton of wires involved. But since I'm not really familiar enough with the engine bay, I'd need a hand, or at least another car to look at as reference.

If I were to get it fixed up mechanically, I guess I could just roll it minus the engine lid, and clean up the rest as good as I can. Anyone have a rear window for a 67?

cheers

CLKWRK May 26th 2009 09:38

ugly but fixable, Pull the decklid and sand it down with a temporary flat black paint job.
rewire is the easy part

oasis May 26th 2009 09:51

I had a couple minutes of hurry up and wait at work so I checked in ... sorry about the car-b-que. I'm blocked here (at work) from seeing pics from free sites like photobucket and imageshack. I hope it is as rebuildable as others are saying, and the insurance doesn't prove to be a hassle. Good luck.

chug_A_bug May 26th 2009 11:36

hey ED I don't know if a 74 Glass is the same,
but if so I have one... that you can have

Chris.

fast Ed May 26th 2009 12:39

Chris, that would be a larger glass I believe, thanks for the offer though. As it stands I'm waiting to see how the insurance adjuster wants to handle it. Don't know if they will put a dollar amount on the total repair, and cut a cheque for that, or if it has to be done at a licensed shop.

thx,
Ed N.

gonebuggy May 26th 2009 13:25

Ed,

That looks pretty nasty. It looks as though the carb has melted a bit (return spring hangar drooping) However, the engine looks to be a very original arrangement, it even has the 67 carb bracket! Very cool car Ed! I say keep those rims! Original is bad-ass. The wiring will be a cinch. Keep us posted on how the claim is handled and help is here if you need it!

fast Ed May 26th 2009 15:02

Well, the insurance appraiser was by, all he did was snap a few photos, take down some info, and tell me to get an estimate for the repairs to fax to him. So I have the manager from one of the body shops we deal with coming by in a few hours, and then I have to decide what to do as far as the mechanical & electrical.

I asked the appraiser if I would be allowed to do the repair myself, and he said that would fine too ... would just have to fax him an estimate. So, maybe I can discuss it with some of you guys on Saturday, and decide on a course of action.

Alex, I don't mind the stock 67 wheels, I added the trim rings on Saturday to dress them up a bit. Not really a fan of wide whitewalls, but they look OK on this car I think. I have a few different vintage looking wheels in mind, I may do something with that next year. Looking at the car on the weekend before the flame-up, I was going to be content with rolling it as-is for the summer.

TunedPerfection May 26th 2009 21:36

I can get wiring for you. I'm a dealer for wiring works.
CIP has the back glass http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=691

If you make a list I can price it out for you.

petevw May 26th 2009 23:32

OUCH Ed! Looks like alot of heat.

Greg, that link is for tires.....not glass. :lmao:

TunedPerfection May 27th 2009 00:35

Hey Pete, shouldn't you be sleeping??:D

http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.as...D845%2D501%2DM

How's that?
My tire customer likely got a link for the glass and went, "What the hell?" :lmao:

oasis May 27th 2009 07:25

I have the original rear glass from my '71 still. I have no idea what shipping is Baltimore to Canada but if you pay for that, you can have it.

The glass is perfectly fine. It has the defroster grid in it but it must have a break in the grid somewhere. That was why I replaced it. (Therefore, it was not in my carbeque.)

petevw May 30th 2009 02:36

Ed i have rear glass for you. No defroster.

I can bring to SpringFling.

fast Ed June 3rd 2009 09:24

Got a call from the insurance company yesterday afternoon, which was pretty quick considering that the estimates only got to them in the morning. Anyway, they have given the go-ahead on the repairs, so I will get the car towed over to Arno's today to get started.

Thanks to everyone for the offers of assistance.

cheers

big daddy June 3rd 2009 21:55

That's great new Fast Ed, Well done.

Monokromatik June 4th 2009 02:19

Good News Ed! Hope you will be ready to roll for JJB!

fast Ed June 4th 2009 16:28

That is the target. The guys from Arno's even asked me that before I brought it up, when they were over to look at the car to do the estimate.

cheers
Ed N.

fast Ed June 9th 2009 09:30

Talked to Bill at Arno's last night, they have their portion of the repairs done. So I'm going to pick it up tonight, and get it back over to Bolton to have the paint work started.

cheers
Ed N.

fast Ed June 10th 2009 13:57

Drove the car from Glen Williams to Bolton last night, seems like it is good to go mechanically. Cosmetically it looks not bad under the hood too, other than that awful aftermarket firewall insulation. Had Bill do a valve adjustment and oil change while it was there to start fresh. I took it over to the body shop here in Bolton that I've had very good work done by previously, he knows that I would really like the car to be ready for next weekend. We'll see how that goes ...

fast Ed June 18th 2009 16:35

Well, it sounds like I will be sporting a two-tone (green and primer) car this weekend. The prep work is getting done, and the NOS engine lid I got from Brad needs some refinishing on the one side that the dampness got to. The acrylic enamel paint apparently needs quite a bit of time to air-dry properly, so the painter would rather do it next week rather than trying to rush it for the weekend.

I guess a primered Bug is better than none at all anyway. :p

cheers
Ed N.
