converting to boxter/996 calipers
 

Is there somebothy out there who has converted his brake setup with bigger calipers discs etc. At the monent I've got the 1986 944T brake setup but are interested in some monoblocs brakes/drilled discs. Does this make any sense compared to my setup at the moment

It's possible with the MBT kit but you'd have to go back to the 1303 spindles.

I'm doing it now with the MBT set-up.

REAR:
You can use 996 calipers, but not the rotors. 996 rear rotors do not fit on the 944 system. You need 993 rotors. You also have to machine like 6 mm. off of the rear hub to fit them. There's also some other parts needed like washers and stuff.

FRONT:
Front 996 rotors you can machine to fit but 993's bolt up. 996 rotors have a different bell depth. I thought I had 993 stuff but didn't. 996 front calipers bolt the same, but not the rears. You need adapters for 996 rears, 993 bolts right up to early 944 rear hubs... not sure about the later as I'm using 83 944 parts.

Front 993 and 996 calipers are both radial mount as the rears are axial and radial respectively. 944 rear baking plates are an axial system. BTW.. you do need a 1303 front suspension for this conversion.

Also. easy way to tell your rotors apart:
996 are 28mm. thick
993 are 32mm. thick

I am fitting 996 brakes all around. However, the conversion is on a standard not a super, so only the rear could be the same (if you use early aluminum 944 diagonal arms).

The rear 944 hubs are too shallow for the 996 rotors. I am having a custom spacer made that will make up for the depth difference, center the rotor properly, and allow for the correct operation of the parking brakes. When the parts are made, and I can confirm that they do in fact work as I hope, I will post the drawings and some pictures of assembly. The drwaings should be up by the end of the week if the machinist can get the spacers made, but the pictures will have to wait until I get a digital camera. (soon, I promise)

The machinist is also making spacers for front 996 rotors to properly center on 944 N/A hubs. I will also include this info when the parts are complete and installed.

It depends on your point of view and if you can spare the money. I decided to do this conversion because I wanted something a little different and I didn't already have any sort of conversion already. If you are happy with the performance, I would stick with what you have.

Sweet! I would love to see these methods as I would rather not buy new rotors.

He made some drilled billet adapters. I forwarded the pictures to Alex for the site.

Depending on how deep the spacer for the hub needs to be, you can just use another beetle spacer and machine it down. You may have to machine a bit off the 'snout' from the front of the hub to get the castle nut to fit with a cotter pin again.

That is what I did to get my 930 309mmx28mm rear rotor to fit correctly.
