944 rear e-brake shoes
 

I've heard that you can use replacement drum brake shoes from a volvo for the e-brake shoes on the 944 trailing arm swap. Can anyone confirm that this is indeed true? If true, what year and model car? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I believe it is actually BMW shoes, they run a similar handbrake setup in one of there cars. From what I've heard these are cheaper than the Porsche replacements.

Sorry I don't know models or years - but a search looking for BMW shoes may show something.

I used BMW brake shoes for models 525I, 530I, 535I, 730I, 735i, 745I from model year 85 on. These models use the same brake shoes as the 944 does.

Thanks Andreas, you just saved me some serious coin! :D

There is no reason to use Volvo, BMW, or other brake shoes. The 76-85 924/944 and 68-79 Bug/Superbug use the same rear brake shoes, 113 609 537C is the VW part number.

The little shoes inside the rear rotor of a 944 set up are the ones Soul was after, for the handbrake.

VW wouldn't have made these, would they?

I have the 86 arms. The VW brake shoe diameter is a little bigger than the Porsche one, also the the bottom of the VW shoe is square and the Porsche one is trianglar where it rests on a molded block on the trailing arm housing. Looking at the picture on Pelican Parts website I would call the shoes identical, however looking at them side by side there are obvious differences. Hell I got pretty excited there for a moment! I'd rather pay $14.00 for e-brake shoes than $120.00 for the Porsche ones!

Well are the 86 and later energency brake shoes used on anything alse or are those who chose to use the early/late aluminum arms stuck with paying Porsche prices. :confused:

Can you please expound how you can DIY for $5.00? Any explanation would be greatly appreciated.

I'm leaning towards grinding the metal portion of the Beetle shoe to match the shape of the 944 shoe, since all the other mounting tabs/locations are the same. I just haven't gotten around to trying it out yet. I'll let you know how it turns out once I've completed it.

Paid NZ$ 55 @ BNT for aftermarket New! Brake shoes. Should be around USD 30, is it really worth the time modifying something that may not work properly???

If you can find the pad material you can brad rivet it onto the shoes you have. The last time I did that was on a private aircraft as the "practical" test for my A&P license. It was a cheap eazy way to do it.

It would only take a few minutes with the grinder to replicate the shape. Plus I have a few old VW shoes laying around. If it worked out I could always duplicate the shape to a new set of shoes that I have. I can get the BMW shoes for $34.99 from www.rockauto.com, but if all it takes is to remove a little metal to get the VW shoes to work, that $34.99 can go towards other stuff...like beer! :haveadrin
