Best budget vw disk brake set up?
I'm currently in the process of building a "Germanlook" Ghia and it's come time to look into my brake options. I realized the hard way that I can't afford to use an early 944 porsche brake set. :( So, a vw based set up is what I'm thinking about now.
My question is; Who makes the best disk for vw based disk brakes? I heard that the redrilled stock disk are not as strong because they are drilled at weak points in the disk. Also, is it a good idea to go ahead and vented disk? If I can? Should I get press-in studs with the disk? I know of most of the companies out there, but I am needing some personal experiance with these companies/products. ie. cb perfomance, aircooled.net... *They will need to be drilled to the Porsche pattern. (5x130) I'm asking about disk right now, but kit suggestions are welcome also. I tried looking though old theads in the forum, but I didn't find the answers I was needing. That's all I can think about right now. Thank you. |
i just bought the race strength CB Performance for my Ghia. supposedly doesn't add track width and uses the press-ins. you really want to go press-ins if at all possible. pricey kit, but CB always has some of the best quality out there. i figured stopping was important enough to spend the few extra bucks.

You might want to check out these guys too
http://www.vdubcustoms.com/ They have a few different options for ya. I plan on using the 944 discs on the 58' panel but they are a pretty easy bolt-on with those because they use the same bearings. Mark |
Bullyboy, Not a bad Idea, I hear they have some quality work. :D
I forgot to mention, I'm looking to spend less than $1000. On 4 wheel disk, if Possible! Thanks for the replies. |
I have heard many good things about the CB set up.

I think with a cheap 944 single pot setup and the machine work you would come out at the same price or a little cheaper, probably cheaper, than most "good" kits....Just my 2 JR

Am I correct in thinking the early 944 has bigger disk? Thank you |
The 944 only got bigger and bigger brakes through the years.

My choice...
Thanks for the input guys. :D I've decided to go with the CB Race strength in the rear and CB disk in the front.
1 more question, for now, does anyone know if CB sells the front disk, drilled to porsche pattern w/press-in studs, out side of the kit? It would seem like a lot of extra money if you already have calipers and bearings. If noone knows, I'll either call or email. Then post for future referance. **I just got off the phone with CB performance, they do sell the disk outside of the kit. For Porsche pattern W/O press in studs they're $75 each, W/press-in studs, they're $95 each. But they're out of stock untill probably the end of march.** |
mikey. i haven't put the kit on yet. haven't even gotten the shipment yet. should be anyday, but not sure when i will get to put them on. have to get teh bug or bus back on the road first in case something goes wrong.
