Ball Joint extra camber eccentrics
Has anyone installed the extra camber eccentrics in their Ball Joint front end? How much camber do they give you?
What is the most negative camber you can get without modifying parts? Has anyone bent the top control arm in to achieve proper sticky camber? Here they are: http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails....12%2D6612%2D10 |
I have them in my bug. I've never measured how much extra camber they give, but I've wound them all the way in. I put them on for a little extra tyre clearance over bumps...

They give you more, and more is better in this case, so try them out first then consider the bending idea. I'm not sure how you bend those things acurately or properly.

Bending is done in a press. You have to go slowly, measuring along the way.
Trevor, do you know how much camber you have now? If you stand ahead of the wheel can you notice the tilt? |
I've got the eccentrics, but I have not installed them yet. I have a slight bit of +ve camber on the front wheels and hoping these will take them to a bit -ve.

I was able to get somewhere just shy of -2 degrees on my mocked up BJ front end. A lot is dependant on how well centered the beam adjuster is. There's enough slop in the (avis) adjuster grub screw fit that it's easy to bias a degree or so towards one side or the other.
Rather than bend the arms, you can flip the upper torsion bars over and re-drill the outer grub screw locations a little further inboard. You're only talking about a degree or two, which means careful measuring before drilling. I think if you need more than that you may need to do more to limit body roll. :D Jeff |
Thanks for the info Jeff.
I did some measurements last night. It appears that the BJ is offset by 3.5mm more when using the extra camber eccentrics. Given that the distance from center to center of the 2 BJs is about 170mm, that should give about 1.2º more negative camber. The car I am working on has zero camber right now. I don't know if the alignment guy set the stock eccentric to max neg camber. |
I know a guy who built some UK aircooled cup cars - on all of those he bent the top arm in a press to give 2-3 degrees neg camber (can't remember the exact value)
