hey i have been browsing the germanlook galleries for a while now and i have fallen in love with the german look bugs. curently i am the not so proud owner of a 1974 super beetle. i have been thinking about selling it due to its need for major work and all the harder to find parts for that year (payed 600 put about 1000 in so far). i want to get another bug and im not sure what is the best for the german look. i know that i love the bigger taillights that started in 73 but i dont think i like the curved windshield and dash on the supers. i was also wondering why there are way more super german lookers than standards out there. are they better? should i keep my bug and make it a looker? any advice for a newbish would be rad!

the reason you see so many Super GL cars is they lend themselves
very nicely to the look. There are many suspension upgrades for them
available in Europe seeing as they are used to racing more often then
standards. In addtion, with their curved windshields they appear more
modern as well.

As far as whether you should modify your currect VW, that is only for
you to decide, because in the end, you have to be happy with it, not us.

I would evalulate the cost of fixing that one up vs. selling it and buying
one in better shape. Body and paint work can be one of the most expensive
parts of restoration, other then a new engine. I have found that it is way
cheaper to bite the bullit and spend a few more thousand on a really nice
car, then to try to fix up a beater. I will never do the latter again!

vujade's response is a succinct overview to your general question. The only thing I might add is if you are really against the curved windshield of a 1303 (a 1973-75 Super Beetle), you have still have two choices.

(1) You could get a standard Beetle. There are those who have very nice German Look standards. Browse through the galleries to see some. Standard Beetles can be modified to improve handling. It depends on what your vision is of the final results.

(2) You could go with a 1302 (a 1971-72 Super Beetle). For the most part, you would be starting with a platform that offers the same advantages as the curved-windshield version and you will retain the same potential possibilities -- except you will also have the flat windshield. Swapping rear fenders for the latter year taillights would be a breeze.
