Introduction and an informal poll (longish)

Hello GL'ers.

I have been lurking here for some time reading up on the German Look and have posted a couple times. I have come to the point where I need to make a decision. I own two sedans, a '67 and a '70. I would like to GL one of them and had been leaning toward the '67 until this evening as it is my first VW and the one I thought I'd like to customize. I love the classic lines and the towel bar bumpers coupled with the 12 volt electrics and the other slightly more modern touches.

The thing is, the '67 is in pretty good shape mechanically. It's pretty useable as a daily driver. The body is in pretty good shape with just a couple trouble spots and the interior is a decently done black vinyl. Nothing special but it's not a basket case. I have been thinking that maybe it's a bit too classic to turn into a GL.

The '70 is, quite honestly, a bit of a beater. It's rattle canned flat black, the tires are shot, the electrical is sketchy. There's no interior to speak of except for the front seats (which are in my garage right now) and the passenger side pan is swiss cheese. But I'm thinking it would actually be a better candidate to GL. The body is in really good shape except the fenders are dinged up and are Mexican anyway. I'm going to cram an EJ20T into one of them, which necessitates IRS in order to move the trans forward. I'd also like 944 brakes and modernish looking gauges. The dash on the '70 is nasty, but I'd shave it anyway. There will be more room in the front for a radiator. I think the window regulators will be more adaptable to power windows and I'd like to rewire. It's also got a sliding steel sunroof that works well.

I think in the end there will be a very small price differential, if any, between GL'ing either car. All that really remains that I prefer about the '67 is the bumpers, which won't really go with a slightly more modern theme anyway. Morally, I feel better about chopping up a kind of beat up late model and having two nice cars in the end rather than molesting my mostly stock '67 and still having a beater to boot.

I guess I've kind of made up my mind, but I'd still welcome any input or advice either way. Thanks

Sounds like the 70 would be the better "Chop-Cut" candidate. The 67 can be the driver while the 70 is getting surgery.
Good luck with the project. :agree:

Also my 2 cents

The '70 would be a better GL in my opinion also. The main thing is, the '70 has an IRS rear suspension already. So, it will handle curves like most GL cars are, curve carving speed freaks.:D

the 70 definitely, i made the mistake of gl ing a mint 67 and whilst the body was amazing to start with by the time you have replaced the engine wings suspension and interior, wheels, clocks, fuel lines, brakes , more body panels you realize there is nothing left of the original car so would have been better off with a scrap shell to start with
cheers jon :D

i'd go 70 for all the same reasons.
