She let go :( .....pics inside

I always thought in the back of my mind it could happen, but it's just starting to sink in.

Blew my 2332! :'(

Took it work on Monday (night shift), planning for it to be the last run before putting it away for the winter. Had fun taking the country roads out of the city, taking some incar video running the HID's. Well, in the morning on the way home, took the scenic route once again. Just as I was near my house, figured what the hell; take it for another blast down just around the corner. So I make the right turn, open it up, break her loose, feather the gas around 6-7500rpm. Feel for traction, shift 2nd, and then it happens, a hollow exhaust note coming from my oil tank on the rear shelf. I let off, and just as i dump the clutch, the motor lets go. What a terrible noise! High pitched metal on metal. Shut it down; look in my side mirror see some sparks on the pavement. Roll it into a parking lot, reach under with the camera and take a pic. Lots of oil dripping down, and can see the #3 rod and piston facing down. Argh.... completely destroyed a cylinder.

So I walk home, what an empty/lonely feeling. Pick up pieces of barrel, spacer, and a spark plug off the road. Grab the towbar and pull it home with my Golf TDI. Pushed it into the garage and went to sleep. Left it alone for a couple days. Woke up today thinking, i could salvage it. Have collected a few spares over the past years, so with a new Wiseco, barrel, some studs, tubes, probably use the AL Pauter rods sitting in the closet, repair the chamber; could get this back together over the winter. So back into the garage to take a closer look. Looks pretty bad, the head is split, and so is the intake manifold. So now i'm bummed. Now after 6yrs, the stock motor/tranny will be going back in.

details of motor:

Cb race case, drysumped
BP 84mm 4340
BP 5.7 4340 chevy rods
94mm Wisecos
Cima barrels
Webcam 86C
Cromo pushrods/8mm studs
1.4 JSC rockers
ARPM superflo's 94mm 48x38 T2 valves K-800's Ti retainers
53mm TB's, RX7 secondary injectors
Electromotive TEC2 EFI
2" stepped merged header

Car on the 17" chromies has put down 178HP 163TQ.

On the walk home, had some time to think. For the $$$/time i've put into it over the years, why do it again? Am I nuts? I've got a second project on the go with a EFI 2332 turbo, pushing a '52 split. For the cash dumped in these 2, i could've been pushing a Porsche C4S or possibly a Turbo. So do i liquidate?

Have a interview to move up in the company tomorrow morning. Confused, can't get my thoughts in order.

Sorry to hear about your loss Pete :( . I watched your bug on the Dyno in GA last march, and on the track at Silverdollar Race the next day.

Aw man! that blows, it always sucks when that happens (and I know:) ).

you could drop your stocker into it and sell it, but then we cant call you "orange peter" anymore.

Ouch ... sorry to hear about the motor Pete. That sucks. Perhaps this is a sign to get that turbo sucker together and running. The turbo has effortless power and is not revving to make it go.

Thanks guys,

I'll stick the stocker in it and keep it. It was my first car, and i can't let it go that easily. I wonder what it will feel like with 50HP again? Bright side is, it can once again become my daily driver. Bryan, thanks for the offer, but i can't do it. This motor will be torn down, and parted out. I'll get a few "trophy" parts out of it to toss on the shelf.

I'll be in the garage this weekend working on the split.:)

Pete,

sorry 'bout that.

But, on the flip side....welcome to the 1600 club. :)

Ouch. That looks like it hurt.

vujade December 6th 2006 10:40

that really sucks Pete... sorry to hear about that man. Throw your stocker
in it, and just enjoy your car as a daily driver again for a while :)

Rob December 6th 2006 13:33

Major Suckage Pete.....

Put in the stocker and drive it.... I'm sure you'll slowy upgrade it again ;)

Rob.
