915 rod thingy

1 Attachment(s)
What is the rod for that comes out of the driver's side front of the 915 transmission? (circled in the picture.)
Does anyone know if you can hook up an early, aftermarket (Red urethane) VW shift rod connector to the shift rod on the 915 tranny? Thanks!

That rod sticking out of your 915 looks like it is for the 911 throttle linkage.
The urethane vw aftermarket shift coupler fit on my 901 transmission no problem, in my ghia I did use a dune buggy shortening kit to dial in the rod length

Throttle linkage? Does it have anything to do with the transmission? Is it needed?

Yeah, I grinded that thingy off too.

I have the same issue. After cutting this off, do you have to worry about anything falling into the gearbox internally ?

Thanks

Sandeep,
I am sure you have also noticed that that rod seems to be jammed stuck in there. I don't know how it is actually inserted into the tranny case, but considering its function (911 throttle linkage), the remains falling inside the case, would be highly unlikely. Its probably glued in there or s/th.
I sure would rather take it out the way it was put in there to be honest...
(also since the G50 has that same rod..). maybe gripping it and twisting the rod back and forth?

Mine was threaded. (M8x1.25mm) It must not have been to hard to remove...as I remember taking it off, but not HOW I did it.

removed with a screwdriver in the hole and turn

Sandeep November 13th 2007 09:51

I was going to post and say mine had a hole in the shaft, screwdriver in the hole to unscrew it but trogdor beat me to it.

I checked and it srews out on a G50 as well (grip-tool, no screwdriver head present), but it also started to leak tranny oil immediately as well...so the hole goes through the case wall.
Not sure if this is the case with a 915 tho.

Sandeep November 13th 2007 17:14

I can confirm that on a 915/62 that this hole is actually a threaded boss that does not extend into the case.

Possibly this is the case for all 915 gearboxes.

The mounting boss on my '85 915 does not open into the case either.
