passat rack and pinion part number

hi, what is the passat rack and pinion part number that can be use for super beetle?thanks

I'd be really surprised if a Passat rack will work properly on a Super. The distance between the pivot points on the end of the rack would have to be identical to the super to work properly. From what I've seen, Super racks are quite a bit different from modern racks.

Hello Jason

the Pasat unit that I mentioned is not a modern rack, it's an 80's unit and reallity is that they are exactly the same at all aspects angles and dimensions except the drive shaft length (which can be shortened) and the way that is attached to the body (which also can be fixed). I cant post pictures so if you go to another thread called rack and pinion retrofit you'll see the pictures that vwbao uploaded and where it's obvius that they are identical. The only aspect that I hadn't time to check is their ratio, I suspect that the pAssat has more turns from side to side just to easy things because of the front placed engine and gearbox

Find a power steering one from an Audi 80 (in the USA called a 4000). It has fewer turn lock-to-lock.

the tie rods of the audi 4000 are located at the both ends of the rack not on the center. Here is the audi 5000/100/200 rack and pinion,I think this will fit for our application..,,??

vwbao,

PM me your email address and I'll forward a pic from the service manual. If you look at the rack in representation to the parts around it you'll see that the close proximity of the centered tie rods to the brake booster would indicate it's centered. The 5000 series and above sure as heck had better have a beefier rack... that car is heavy.
True the 5000 and 4000 look different, but the 4000/VW Fox/Quantum still have tie rods that are equal length and the bracket that's missing from the illustration of the rack moves the mounting point of the inner tie rods over center of the vehicle.

I have a scan I'd like to post, but I can't get it below 1mb.
