 I remember seeing a website a while back that made Subaru conversion kits for buses and they noted on their site that they were working on a kit for beetles. I *think* they were out of Australia but...

 I'm not sure about engine and tranny removal. From what I can see it looks like part of the rear section can be taken out for engine work and pulling but with the body on the car it may be tough.
