For dual carbs, Dellorto DRLA is supposed to be the best but for webers go with the IDF.

Many GL cars use a Mazda RX7 style cooler under the front bumper. The traditional US way is mount the oil cooler/fan under the rear package tray (over the drive axle). The plate type coolers are more effecient than the tube and fin type. Just about any VW parts house sells the coolers. Many people don't use a thermostat with their cooler and it can take a long time to get your oil up to temp without one. I think it is well worth the expense to have oil temp regulated.
