There's nothing wrong with a German Look car with any power plant in my eyes. Hell, I'm running a 1600 with header and dual weber 40's, everything else stock. The BIG thing that makes a GL a GL is the wheels. Second is handling and brakes (and I have disks and drums). But, I do think the German Look is more about an attitude. It's about cruising and updating the looks of the car. Modernization! At least that's how I look at it.
In short, run your small T1 and dont worry about a thing. The GL community is nowhere near as strict as the Cal-Lookers.
