I'm doing it now with the MBT set-up.
REAR:
You can use 996 calipers, but not the rotors. 996 rear rotors do not fit on the 944 system. You need 993 rotors. You also have to machine like 6 mm. off of the rear hub to fit them. There's also some other parts needed like washers and stuff.
FRONT:
Front 996 rotors you can machine to fit but 993's bolt up. 996 rotors have a different bell depth. I thought I had 993 stuff but didn't. 996 front calipers bolt the same, but not the rears. You need adapters for 996 rears, 993 bolts right up to early 944 rear hubs... not sure about the later as I'm using 83 944 parts.
Front 993 and 996 calipers are both radial mount as the rears are axial and radial respectively. 944 rear baking plates are an axial system. BTW.. you do need a 1303 front suspension for this conversion.
Also. easy way to tell your rotors apart:
996 are 28mm. thick
993 are 32mm. thick
