I had cut my inner fender, just to make adjusting the carbs a little easier. I cut a rectangle about 2" by 8". Looks fine, rarely drive in any weather conditions so the concern of mud and stuff is not there. If it makes things easier, why not. The hole can always be welded back in if you dont like the look.
