Did you leave the spring attached to the hood? If you did the long skinny U shaped bit points up in the air as you move towards the car slip this into the holder on the body. 2 or 3 people helping is best to avoid scratching. I removed the pins from my hinges and used 40 hp dipsticks instead, as in this picture.
