I've heard of using a knock sensor ignition system from a 1.8L wcvw engine on a type 4. in theory should work great since its could be converted to standalone easily, in practice probably would be trouble, since the timing is not setup for the type 4.
theoretically all you'd need is the dizzy, box, coil and wiring from a '86-89 GLI or GTI probably need to have the dizzy turned down to slip into the type 4 block. and find a suitable place to mount the knock sensor.
