vujade's response is a succinct overview to your general question. The only thing I might add is if you are really against the curved windshield of a 1303 (a 1973-75 Super Beetle), you have still have two choices.

(1) You could get a standard Beetle. There are those who have very nice German Look standards. Browse through the galleries to see some. Standard Beetles can be modified to improve handling. It depends on what your vision is of the final results.

(2) You could go with a 1302 (a 1971-72 Super Beetle). For the most part, you would be starting with a platform that offers the same advantages as the curved-windshield version and you will retain the same potential possibilities -- except you will also have the flat windshield. Swapping rear fenders for the latter year taillights would be a breeze.
